France Bastille Day: Military troups start arriving at Place the la Concorde • FRANCE 24 English
And we can see the troops there arriving at PE Gronold. Phillip, uh, tell us about this part of the French capital and why it’s significant. Well, first of all, I’ve been I’ve taken part many times in the Bastile Day uh parade as a journalist at Plasta Concord in the Sha perched on a monument with a microphone trying to get sound. Um, it’s always a very uh emotional and exciting experience. Uh, watching it on television is good, but being there is even better. Uh, and watching this parade going down here, these Indonesian troops just shows about the hard work, the precision, uh, the costumes, all is absolutely impeccable. Uh, not a step out of line. all the rehearsals, the months of training that people have to go through just for this very short period walking down the Shanley which is just about a kilometer and a bit uh in length. Uh but no uh mess up, no uh no problems with anything and everyone I think happy to be there as much as President Emanuel Macarron who appears to be enjoying himself immensely with lots of smiles and and laughing going on in uh in the tribute next to his wife. Uh so as far as plasta concord is concerned it’s uh significant in the fact that it used to be called plasta revol uh in connection with with the French revolution. Some of the buildings at Plasta Concord, the hotel de la Marin, uh the hotel deon, uh which are there now actually date from before the revolution uh about 1760. Uh and they were there when Plaster Concord used to be the the place where people were guillotined. There was a guillotine set up there just outside the the hotel de and that’s where Louis V 16th the French king was guillotine. That’s where Marian Twinet uh was also guillotine and several other uh notary personal uh personalities from from the French Revolution. So, it’s quite fitting in a way that this parade goes down to Plasta Concord, which remains today one of the uh most beautiful uh squares uh in Paris. And so much so that the mayor of Paris uh and Hidalgo has decided to try to kick traffic out of Fla Concord because it’s being used or been used for decades as a giant roundabout uh by people going from one side of the river to the other. Um she’s made it uh just a single lane for each uh vehicle on only one side of of the square. And where these troops are marching right now uh is going to be a green area very soon with grass uh to stop traffic from driving past the bottom of the sha. So all of this is part of this Parisian desire to make Paris greener and more eco-friendly. So in a way when you look at plaster concour today in a few years time well the areas just around the the the tribune there uh will soon be covered in grass and be grassy areas for people to sit in uh and enjoy the view of the sha.
Swooping warplanes, axe-carrying warriors, a drone light show over the Eiffel Tower and fireworks in nearly every French town… France is celebrating its national holiday Monday with 7,000 people marching, on horseback or riding armored vehicles along the cobblestones of the Champs-Elysees, the most iconic avenue in Paris. FRANCE 24’s Philip Turle expands onthe history and symbol of place de la Concorde, as troups start arriving there as part of the military parade.
