US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent on Monday called for sweeping reforms to what he described as an outdated and overly complex financial regulatory system, arguing that current bank capital requirements are stifling lending and hindering economic growth.

Speaking at a Federal Reserve regulatory conference, in comments reported by Reuters, Bessent said excessively high capital thresholds are pushing lending into the non-bank sector and distorting financial markets.
