In his talk with SB TV, retired Colonel Aleksandr Tikhansky, a military-political analyst and a security expert, explained why — despite all attempts by Belarus — Poland and the Baltic States refuse to liaise with our country

The expert stated that currently, both Poland and the Baltic States perceive and present themselves as the eastern flank of NATO. Over the last five years, they have successfully hosted numerous Defender training courses on their territories.

Mr. Tikhansky emphasised that ‘Poland and Lithuania play a significant role in this issue, and their tandem is evident everywhere’.

He also mentioned that in 2024, military exercises involving 96,000 military troops took place near Belarus.

According to the military-political analyst, the Defender exercise cycle includes ongoing practice of both ground and air operations, taking place just 20km from Belarus. “Additionally, it’s important to note that a Bundeswehr brigade has been established near our borders, with its inauguration attended by the President of Lithuania and Germany’s Defence Minister Pistorius,” Mr. Tikhansky added.

The analyst pointed out that the current circumstances present risks and challenges, leading to military threats that Belarus must address.

Mr. Tikhansky mentioned that our country has opted to relocate some military exercises away from the borders and decrease the number of participants, but ‘this does not provoke any reaction’.

He further clarified why neighbouring countries are hesitant to come to observe the military drills in Belarus, stating, “If observers attend, they will need to report on it in the media. But what will they report? There is no military buildup in Belarus, and no aggressive stance towards Europe. It’s not advantageous for them.”
