On Tuesday, 22 July, the government approved a regulation to build 11 Disaster Management Centres at a cost of €106.4 million.

The Ministry of the Interior said that the rules for the implementation of the fourth selection round of project applications under the European Union (EU) Cohesion Policy programme 2021-2027 will allow the State Agency for Provisions to build disaster management centres with EU support in Tukums, Riga (Bolderāja), Kuldīga, Preiļi, Sigulda, Aizkraukle, Limbaži, Jūrmala (Kauguri), Dobele, Ludza and Saldus.

The project is planned to use €106,424,959, of which €24,669,413 will come from the European Regional Development Fund and €81,755,546 from national co-financing. The available funding will cover the design and construction of these buildings, their appropriate fitting out with furniture, equipment and specialised technological equipment.

The Ministry noted that the overall situation of the real estate portfolio of the home affairs sector remains critical. The technical condition of the real estate in its possession continues to deteriorate year after year, with some buildings in a state of disrepair or near disrepair.

Only 1.9% of all buildings have been put into use since 2000, i.e. 12 out of a total of 647 buildings. Most of the State Fire and Rescue Service and State Police units have been in the same premises for more than 30 years, are in a poor state of repair and functionally inadequate, and most of the buildings also have a high energy consumption, with a consequent negative impact on the overall climate footprint of the country.
