NYK Line has started the continuous use of bio-LNG fuel on two of its LNG-powered car carriers.
The bio-LNG was supplied by Titan Supply B.V. (Titan) at the port of Zeebrugge to Daisy Leader and Sumire Leader last month.
The bio-LNG fuel supplied under the mass balance method is recognised as carbon neutral in the whole process from production to consumption (well-to-wake) and is ISCC EU certified, an international standard for sustainability, ensuring compliance with EU regulations and traceability throughout the supply chain.
Niels den Nijs, Titan CEO, said its mission is to provide solutions to help the shipping industry transition to cleaner fuels.
Kaori Takahashi, NYK Fuel Group General Manager, said, “Bio-LNG fuel is a highly effective option for decarbonising the shipping industry. We will continue actively promoting its use.”
Bio-LNG, produced from sustainable biomass, can achieve up to an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to marine diesel, making it a key contributor to decarbonisation efforts in the maritime sector.
It has the potential to meet up to 3% of total energy demand for shipping fuels by 2030 and 13% by 2050.
However new analysis from Norway-based energy research firm Rystad Energy warns that global supply of bio-LNG is unlikely to meet projected demand from the shipping sector, raising concerns over its viability for large-scale decarbonisation.
