  1. I’m surprised he bulked up to play Dr Strange. The character didn’t strike me as the muscular type. But maybe when he’s always standing next to Thor and The Hulk you don’t notice.

  2. A few weeks back, David Vetter (a climate writer) was threatening to block anyone on BlueSky who dared suggest that we should give up world-spanning pop concerts in the name of climate action. And then seemed a bit miffed when a bunch of people preemptively blocked him instead.

It’s one of the implications of the polls about climate action. Almost everyone seems to be in favor of it, but when you ask the same people what they’re willing to give up, the answer is typically, “Not much.”

It’s why we’re doomed to fail, because everyone can rationalize *something* that’s too important to give up, regardless of the environmental consequences. And with the huge role that entertainment plays in the world — movies, music, sports, gaming — we’ll expect/demand a sustainable option, even if none is possible.

  3. The film industry truly is incredibly wasteful. They implement green policies during the show, but every department uses too much. Then as soon as the show wraps, everyone wants to move on to the next thing as quickly as possible and they throw out so much.

Old school way of doing things dominate certain departments. They use tons of paper printing and reprinting. Some departments use paper copies instead of digital (I know of accountants with paper files stored from shows dated back to the 80s).

Each show has temporary offices set up, often the furniture is thrown away so they don’t have to sell or store it.

Costumes buy multiples of things, some never worn only to be returned.

Transport vehicles are constantly running. Idling as they wait to drive people sometimes just a few blocks back and forth.

It goes on and on for every department. We can do so much better.
