Hi all
Today my wife received this from finanzamt with a new steuernummer.
We got married last year and filed the taxes jointly for the first time this year (awaiting feedback)
Can someone help me explain this letter and why was it sent?
Thanks

Did your wife move?
The tax number (as the letter says, not to mistake with the tax ID) is basically the internal case number at your tax office.
This sometimes happens due to internal mistakes at the taxes office, nothing to worry about, just use the new number from now on.
You get one Steuernummer per case. Your joint taxes is technicly a new case, as you are sort of like an organization now. if you decide to hand in seperate taxes, your old numbers will get used again.
Sometimes the Steuernummer changes, e.g. if another Finanzamt becomes responsible.
You have to diferentiate it from the Steuer-ID, that never changes.
Steuernummer can change for a lot of reasons. Most of the time its in case of marriage or moving towns. But could also be in cases of bankruptcy or if your wife would freelance on the side or even renting a house that was inherited. Most plausible cause was an internal mistake or sometimes it happens that we get delayed informations from the city ie that she moved etc.
The first 3-4 numbers before the „/„ indicate the Finanzamt if they are different from her old number, it would suggest some errors in the System. If you are REALLY curious you could male a call to your states Finanzamt Hotline, just google „your local finanzamt hotline“. The agents in the hotline are just regular Finanzamt workers that can take a look at her profile.
