Despite the ceasefire, Syria’s Al-Sharaa faces unrest • FRANCE 24 English

Despite the announcement of an immediate ceasefire, tensions remain high in Sueda and fighting continues in the streets. The Syrian president says a group of security forces have been deployed in an attempt to control the situation. The Syrian state is committed to protecting all minorities and sects in the country and is proceeding to hold all violators accountable from any party. No one will escape accountability. We disassociate ourselves from all the crimes and transgressions that have occurred whether from inside Sweda or outside it. But the fighting has laid bare the challenges facing the Syrian president. Ahmed al-Shara has repeatedly promised to protect religious minorities. But the ethnically charged clashes between Jews and Bedawin armed groups have killed and wounded hundreds of people in the past week and have quickly escalated. Israel entered the frey claiming to defend Drews and carried out large air strikes in the capital and surrounds. An intervention welcomed by prominent Drew spiritual leader Hikmat al-Hijeri who appealed directly for help from Israel’s prime minister despite objections from many across the community who wanted deescalation. Bedawin fighters also mobilized and still stand ready to join the clashes. Our issue is not to enter to destroy and to strike. No, our issue is with those who support Hijra who belongs to the Israeli occupation. The ceasefire was first announced by the US ambassador to Turkey on Friday who said both Syria and Israel had agreed and were supported by Turkey, Jordan, and its neighbors. The question is whether Drews and Bedawin armed groups will agree to permanently put down their weapons.

The Syrian presidency on Saturday announced an immediate ceasefire after days of sectarian violence in the predominantly Druze province of Sweida that left more than 900 people dead, according to a war monitor. The US envoy to Syria earlier said that Israel and Syria had agreed to a ceasefire following Israel’s intervention this week in support of Druze armed groups that clashed with Bedouin clans and government forces. 1. Syrian factions are caught in infighting, pointing fingers at Israel, and plotting attacks against it—what a mess. With such hostile intentions, the IDF would have full justification to decisively neutralize the threat.

  2. Syria should become a federal state like Switzerland for the 5 ethnicities: Sunni Arabs, Alevis, Kurds, Christian Greek Orthodox, and Druze.
