A huge redevelopment for Edgware was approved by Barnet council. This new plan will build over 3000 homes and will be built on what is currently the Broadwalk shopping centre and car park. The existing bus station and garage will also be relocated underground. This obviously raised eyebrows as nobody wants to be underground with loads of engines. The council said that as the bus fleet will all be electric in future people shouldn’t worry about fumes, but then the fire brigade countered that having people live above dozens of huge bus batteries is a really stupid idea. The council accepted this risk (along with lots of money) and building is due to start in the next few years.

Locals were obviously a bit annoyed. While anyone who has visited Edgware recently knows that it really ain’t what it used to be, and is really quite grotty, neighbours were shocked by the scale and lack of extra provisions for schools, healthcare, traffic etc.

The council voted 6-3 in favour.

  1. Fantastic to see councils finally working in favour of the people

  2. Good. The housing is desperately needed and NINBYs can cry some more.

  3. Great let’s actually build things instead of pontificating, hiring consultants to do assessments, having drawn out legal battles, pork barrel politics …

  4. Love to see it. Nonzero chance I’ll buy one of those new builds! Edgware is mostly semi-detached homes at the moment, lots of potential for densifying.
