Originally built in 1952 to enrich uranium, the Kentucky plant is one of four sites selected by the Department of Energy for AI-related projects — including data centers and energy generation facilities.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the Paducah plant, along with the three other sites, are uniquely well-situated to host the AI projects — which he said will “bolster grid reliability, strengthen our national security, and reduce energy costs.”
Sen. Mitch McConnell applauded the selection, saying he’s proud of the Paducah community and its workforce and expressed confidence in their ability to help “facilitate US leadership in AI.”
Solicitations for the projects are expected to be released in the coming months and partners could be selected by the end of the year.
