MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Rescue teams in Spain are searching for an American hiker missing in the Pyrenees. 27-year-old Cole Henderson was reported missing on July 14 after he missed his flight home to the Netherlands on July 12.
According to Rhodes College, Henderson studied computer science and graduated from the college in 2020.
The last time he was heard from was on July 9, according to friends who have been posting nonstop on social media.
Specialist mountain rescue teams and helicopters are searching in the Ordessa y Monte Perdido National Park in Northern Spain, per CNN.
According to one of his friends’ posts on Facebook, Henderson texted saying he parked his car, turned his phone on airplane mode, and was beginning the hike.
Authorities also found Henderson’s car in Torla, a town to the west of the national park.
Rhodes College said in a statement, “We are aware of this tragic situation and have been monitoring it since his disappearance was reported. Cole is a Class of 2020 graduate of Rhodes, and we pray he will be found soon.”
Dr. D. Brian Larkins, an associate professor and chair of the department of computer science at Rhodes, taught Henderson.
In a statement, Dr. Larkins said, “While Cole was at Rhodes, he was an excellent student who was diligent, responsible, and a delight to have in class. All of the computer science faculty have been concerned about his well-being and hope that he returns home safely as soon as possible.”
