Public outcry in France over return of banned insecticide • FRANCE 24 English

It is toxic. It sticks around in the ground for years. And multiple studies have found it to be linked to a slew of diseases and cancers in humans. Informally, it’s often called the bee killer. First studies show that it has a disorientating effect on bees, which can cause entire hives to collapse and with them the pollonization that we rely on for food. Acetamid is part of a larger group of insecticides called neonicotenoids. They attack the central nervous system of insects and they work. But they also indiscriminately kill or harm other living organisms too. These chemicals are so dangerous that they were outlawed in 2018 in France. But with the passing of the now contested Duplon law on July 8th, a sedimer may soon be sprayed again on French fields and trees. With multiple studies proving a wide range of toxicity, why then could it soon be back on the shelves? Well, first, some French farmers are in favor of its return. They say it’s their only means of defense against insects that eat their sugar beats and hazelnuts. And they also say that they’re at an unfair disadvantage, for it remains legal in 26 of the 27 EU nations. The European Food and Safety Authority ruled in May last year that countries have until 2033 to cease using it, and it’s questioned its toxicity, saying large enough studies haven’t been done yet. Politicians in France continue to debate which study to site and which to believe. But for the over 1 million French people who signed the petition, they say the risk of this toxic chemical contaminating our food, bodies, and ecosystems is just too Great.

More than 1.3 million people in France have signed a petition urging the government to repeal a recently passed law, the Duplomb Law, approved by parliament on July 8. Among its controversial measures is the reauthorization of a pesticide known to be harmful to both human health and biodiversity.

  1. We lose our bees, we lose everything, our lives included. This is pandering to a few industries at the cost of ALL of us.

  2. The produce must be labelled so people can make a choice to eat or not eat it! Another typical American poison for the world.
