Driving from Munich to Prague vie this village named Kelheim, I saw this parking place which is extremely huge. Its next to a sports complex but why would a sports complex would have such a huge parking place. Any idea what and why is this?

  1. The long line parking spots make me think these are cars either ready for export, or have been imported. Maybe it’s a temporary parking place until the cars get shipped to a dealership.

  2. It’s a place where a company stores new or used cars. You can see most cars are surrounded by other cars, so that they can’t be driven out on their own without moving other cars first, so it can’t be a normal parking lot.

  3. Kelheim has a harbor on the river Danube with a logistics terminal specialized in car transports. The parking terrain you see here is an extension of that terminal, likely for storing cars until they can be loaded onto trucks and distributed further.

  4. „Kelheim ist für uns ein wichtiger Standort in unserem internationalen Automobillogistiknetzwerk, ideal gelegen für die Konsolidierung von Fahrzeugen und anschließender Händlerverteilung in den deutschen Markt sowie die Benelux-Länder. Mit dem Bau des neuen Autoregals stärken wir diesen trimodal angebundenen Inlandterminal“, sagt Andrea Eck, Vorstand für den Geschäftsbereich AUTOMOBILE bei der BLG-Gruppe

“Kelheim is an important location for us in our international automotive logistics network, ideally situated for the consolidation of vehicles and subsequent distribution to dealers in the German market and the Benelux countries. With the construction of the new car rack, we are strengthening this trimodal inland terminal,” says Andrea Eck, Executive Board Member for the AUTOMOBILE division at the BLG Group.

  5. If you look closely, you will see that a lot of the cars are parked in a way that they can’t get out individually.

It’s not really a parking lot, it’s actually a storage facility in the harbor area for cars getting shipped out from the factories in Bavaria and other areas along the Danube.

    See https://www.blg-logistics.com/en/sites-germany/kelheim for more details.

  6. This is a logistics center near the harbour of Kelheim. The Rhine – Main – Danube canal starts in Kelheim.

20km northeast there’s a large BMW factory in Regensburg. 40km southwest are the Audi Headquarters in Ingolstadt.
