Why didn’t anyone tell me how compact and effective these portable air conditioners are? Why was I suffering through the last heat wave 💀

  1. They’re usually just a bit spenny is all – I’ve tried to convince my lass to let me throw a couple of hundred at one, but nooo, we need to “eat” and “pay rent” and “afford my mum’s hospice”, pfft.

  2. They’re very inefficient compared to a installed AC unit but they do the job. For the same amount of power you get more than double the cooling from an installed unit.

If you have a good seal on the window adapter they are great for a single room.

  3. Why is the fashion now for massive screens and keyboards for dwarves?

The PS3 game and Chanel Allure on the right hand side reminds me of what I bought using my EMA.

  4. Mine cost me £280. 10,000 BTU. Worth every penny. Sleep well.

  5. How can you complain about the weather when you have the means to make your home a comfortable temperature and humidity? It’s just not the British way.

  6. I wanna know what that thing is on the window that’s stopping bugs come in

  7. I caved in before the first heatwave. Just being able to sleep at night and have one room that is tolerable during peak heat makes it totally worth it.

  8. How loud is it? We have a big bulky thing that’s not very mobile.

  9. Purchased one this year and so happy. They’re not cheap so it took a while to get there but very worth it.

  10. If only you didn’t have the biggest monitor in the world counteracting your AC

  11. What model is that? I’ve not seen one that small before!

  12. Well now I know why it’s suddenly colder. I hope you’re proud of yourself

  13. I tried everything before I got a proper portable AC. Even those stupid Air Cooler things off Ebay which was complete crap… tried covering the window with tin foil to reflect the heat but the rustling of the foil was too much.

Was the best investment ever, get one with at least 9000 BTU though…

  14. My issue is that all my windows open outwards. I’ve never seen a window open inwards in my life, so why do they only make window seals for windows that open that way.

I’d have one in a heartbeat if I could find something reliable to seal the window. Most recommended options suggest sealing the entire window cavity if you have an outward opening window, which is just nuts.

  15. They aren’t even that expensive and they cost like 15-20p per hour to run. It’s worth it to not feel utterly miserable during the summer.

  16. I bought one last year when the summer didn’t turn out to be so hot.. I got it almost half the price. It will cool my room, the hallway and my office nicely! It has been worth its weight this summer

  17. There are two times
    Before A/C
They are expensive and I will only need to use it during this unprecedented heat wave.
    After A/C
They are so worth it and they make all the difference to a comfortable work day, if working from home, or sleeping. They are not that expensive to run if you don’t opt for 18 degrees but something a bit more comfortable. They are noisy but if you can’t sleep during the heat then you at least can with one of these, and there are always ear plugs. Alternatively cooling for a few hours before bedtime with the door closed creates a room that is ok.

  18. It needs a heat pipe that goes outside right? I really hope it does because that’s why I haven’t bought one yet. 😅

Asking for a friend, where did you get it?

I’m in Italy and it was 37C the other day. Spent all day out in it. No problem. But it was only 10% humidity. Versus 34C and 90% in UK which I found unbearable. Stopped eating.

  19. Yeh these are brilliant. £190 from Amazon 2 years ago. I had no idea they were so effective and I wish we’d bought one YEARS ago for our flat. I think what put me off was the window seal kit malarkey but we run it without that just put the hose out of the window and it still works very well.

  20. Those Meaco units are great! I bought the 10000BTU unit to cool the house as we have a baby, the baby doesn’t like it for some reason and prefers to sleep without it. My win though as our bedroom was a cool 19°c when downstairs was 28°c.

I think A/C will be pretty standard in the UK in 5/10 years time.

  21. The latest heatpump air to water systems can cool the water going through your radiators as well and apply a similar level of cooling to heating. The move to electric heating with heatpumps is going to bring this level of comfort on those crazy hot days for the entire house without the noise!

Mr Cool does Air to Air home install AC split units that can be had for £2000 or so, a lot more than a portable one and they require some holes in the wall to fit. If you have the right location on your house to put the box outside and the blower inside it’s going to be quiet and more effective than a portable.

The portables work, they just tend to suck hot air back into the room with negative air pressure so despite their BTU rating they don’t work as well as their rating suggests. They are also really noisy, obnoxiously so.

  22. Should have just got that little guy to use Kamui and open up a very cold dimension…

  23. We have ceiling fans in our house, they are a good send, but I have wondered about aircon unit…

  24. Probably because the fuckers are expensive. It’s basically my nuclear red button purchase for when I can’t take it anymore.

  25. Right?! I got on this train years ago.

Want a near-free **massive** boost in cooling power? Mod it and convert it to a dual-hose.

You just whack some MDF with a big hole on the back then add some extra tubing. Foil tape works well.

Want to go extra hard? Add some louvres to the tubes to keep bugs and rain out.

Want to go even harder? That window seal sucks and lets a lot of heat through. Especially around the edge of the zip, just put your hand there & feel it! Buy a sheet of acrylic that covers the window area with the tube holes pre-cut, cost about £100 from cut-my-plastic or similar sites. Bonus of acryllic is it still lets light through.

EDIT: Forgot one more thing, non-return flaps are a great addition to keep the outside air out when the aircon is off.

  26. How do you find gaming on that monitor? I’m so close to getting one.

I have two setups on my desk; one for work and one for play. 4 monitors 3 keyboards, 2 mice. It takes up so much space and energy. And it’s so warm.

I really wanna get something like an Odyssey and just have a KVM switch to move between everything

  27. I’ve got a Meaco dehumidifier and now a Meaco AC, my Meaco collection is growing.

Is that the stream deck buttons next to your keyboard? Can you provide a link to that digital time thingy you have on your desk.

  28. We tried to tell your, but our voice were deafened by the noise of our portable ACs.

  29. Surely a regular fan would’ve sorted that space right out.

  30. I’m nosy, what’re you watching on your computer screen?
