  1. A costed, sensible policy from the great and the good of Ty Hywel? Well I never.

    Good shout this.

  2. Looking forward for some people to be against this 😂

  3. Good shout.

Our nearest pool is over an hour away by bus.

Not really a viable option here.

  4. When I was in primary school in the 1980s, free swimming lessons at the age of 10-11 were mandatory. I couldn’t participate due to surgery, but I was already a strong swimmer by that age, so the exclusion didn’t set me back; my point is that my exclusion was unusual and had to be justified.

Did this end at some point?

If it did, then I definitely support its return.

  5. My taids brother drowned in the river dee when he was bach.

Even if the bus takes an hour, I’m so glad we’re addressing the safety of our kids.

  6. Is this not a thing everywhere in Wales? Schools in swansea have done blocks of swimming lessons for children at no cost to the parent as part of PE since I was a child and I’m in my 40’s both of my children had swimming lessons through school too

  7. My kids have all grown up here in Brittany, and in France, all children have to gain a [Swimming Skills Certificate](https://www.education.gouv.fr/bo/15/Hebdo30/MENE1514345A.htm)° by the end of their first year of secondary school.

°Google Translate provides a pretty readable English version, having read both the French and the machine translated English version.

Although they only have to be able to swim 15m, they have to be able to do so both on their front and their back, plus they have to demonstrate many other skills, both in and out of the water, that will provide them with a minimum level of water safety.

These skills are drilled into them, over and over, so that they become reflexive responses, should they or someone nearby, accidentally fall into a body of water, or end up in trouble while swimming or participating in watersports, and are supposed to be just enough to get to the side, if possible, or to allow them to call for help.

They are not lifesaving skills but ‘how not to drown’ skills.

We paid for them to have lessons at the local pool, but they also had lessons for the last two years of primary school and the first year of secondary. They also have swimming lessons again as one of a range of sports during PE in the first year of high school.

Brittany is very similar to Wales, with a beautiful, stunning coastline, but Central Brittany, where I live, is also very similar to inland Wales, with many rivers, lakes and reservoirs.

In France, it’s very common for lakes and reservoirs to have manmade beaches for swimming but also, sometimes people will find swimming spots in larger rivers too.

Teaching kids how to swim saves lives.

    It’s that simple.

Ideally, it would go even further and many kids will have a lifelong love of swimming and other watersports and activities – kayaking, canoeing, surfing, paddleboarding, rowing, sailing, even just fishing…

That said, for this to work in Wales, there would also need to be more funding for the local councils, and for more local swimming pools as so many have been closed in the last couple of decades!

It’s all very well saying that schools need to teach children to swim but they can’t do that without the local swimming pools for them to swim in!

And it’s not just that the schools needs access to local pools, but the children and their families (and everyone else in the community, for that matter) also need access to a local swimming pool!

There’s no point teaching a child to swim once a week, for 2 or 3 terms, if that child has nowhere to practice between lessons, over the holidays, or once the teaching ends and then they lose their skills and muscle memory!

Swimming pools provide both fitness, leisure and relaxation to communities.

Swimming is often the safest way for many people to start being active, or to be active at all.

  8. In before RT davies and his lapdog DOGEwales to try and twist it and claim plaid are trying to pay for immigrants to swim the channel or some shit like that
