Medco E&P Natuna Ltd. (Medco E&P) has launched first production from the Terubuk Wellhead Platform M (WHP-M), its second in South Natuna Sea Block B, reinforcing its commitment to national energy resilience.

The milestone, achieved on July 25, 2025 or three months ahead of schedule, adds a production capacity of 6,600 barrels of oil per day (bopd) and 60 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of gas to the national output.

Deputy for Exploitation at the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas), Taufan Marhaendrajana, who witnessed the first production from Medco E&P’s Jakarta office, praised the achievement.

“The success of the Terubuk WHP-M project demonstrates that Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas industry can deliver world-class projects quickly, safely, and efficiently with 100 percent local human resources. This is a tangible result of strategic collaboration between government and industry,” he said.

Taufan also noted that Medco E&P’s achievements in developing marginal offshore fields could serve as a model for other contractors, especially through planned, collaborative, and technology-driven approaches.

The achievement is part of broader efforts by SKK Migas and production sharing contractors (KKKS) to meet Indonesia’s national energy targets.

The project also marked a significant milestone with the completion of the WHP-M topside fabrication in just six months, one month faster than the earlier WHP-L platform and far below the typical 10–12-month offshore fabrication timeline.

All phases of the project − from design to execution −were carried out entirely by Indonesian talent, showcasing the nation’s ability to deliver world-class energy infrastructure.

The Terubuk development, encompassing both WHP-L and WHP-M, recorded over 750,000 safe working hours without incidents. This underscores Medco E&P’s strong adherence to safety standards.

WHP-M also incorporates sustainability principles, utilizing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems as auxiliary energy sources and integrating advanced technologies, such as Digital Microwave Radio and Integrated Control & Safety Systems for remote monitoring and control to improve operational efficiency and reliability.

Medco E&P President Director Ronald Gunawan appreciate the full support from the government, SKK Migas, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and all stakeholders involved, enabling WHP-M to reach sail-away and onstream phases in record time.

“The project’s innovation in management sets a new benchmark for rapid, efficient, and sustainable marginal field development, reflecting the capability of Indonesian professionals to deliver globally scaled energy projects,” he said.
