Transport for Wales train staff are being given bonuses linked to how many tickets they scan on services. In 2024-25, bonuses of £1m were paid to staff, up an average 60% on the previous year.
The incentive, TfW say, not only raises revenue, but cuts down on fraud because unscanned tickets can be used to claim refunds for up to four weeks after a journey. Staff are paid bonuses based on how many tickets they scan, and in 2024-25 staff scanned more than a million tickets each month.

Great idea.
Slow news day.
How about they offer bonuses based on how many trains actually run, or inversely proportional to the number of people who get stranded or have to get taxis for miles late at night.
Idk what the problem is with it. They’re literally just doing it to encourage guards to walk through the trains instead of just standing at their door of choice
Raises revenue and rewards workers with more cash instead of a pat on the back? Hard to see a downside for all involved. Good for them.
Well, that explains it. I was traveling in Wales and every single train I was on they asked to see my ticket. When I was in England, they rarely asked.
And the standard 25% fare increase to cover it I imagine.
