
Tsunami Hawaii, California, San Diego, Russia News LIVE Updates: Waves have began to hit US shores, including in Hawaii and California, after tsunami alerts were issued for nations across the Pacific when a strong 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s far eastern coast, CNN reported. The earthquake triggered tsunami along the coastal areas of Russia’s Kuril Islands, Japan’s large northern island of Hokkaido as well. Indonesia and Philippines, too, have issued tsunami warnings.
US braces for impact: The US National Weather Service has warned people from venturing along the coast looking for tsunami waves. “This will NOT be a single wave. Do NOT try to go to the coast to take photos,” the NWS San Francisco Bay Area office posted on X. Meanwhile, an emergency preparedness agency forecast stated that waves of less than 30 centimeters (less than 1 foot) were expected to reach Tofino around 11:30 pm today local time, after hitting Langara Island around 10:05 pm. Forecasting that “multiple waves over time” were expected, the agency suggested local governments to consider evacuating marinas, beaches and other areas near the ocean.

All about the earthquake: The earthquake off the Kamchatka Peninsula was the strongest since 1952, the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences said. “Given the scale of this event, we should expect strong aftershocks, possibly with magnitudes up to 7.5,” the Service said in a statement.
