Let’s be honest. People’s prospects aren’t getting any better and now it’s a multi generational problem
You can’t cut funding to Policing and social programmes for decades and then act surprised when crime is on the rise…
Maybe if the police could police it wouldn’t be a problem.
Can’t stop and search certain people in fear of being called racist, most police don’t have guns, police force full of underperforming people because it doesn’t pay enough.
Pay the police properly, give them the equipment that all other police in Europe and the first world have, let them stop whoever they need to.
Young kids are dying needlessly because police are under equipped and the leadership don’t want to appear racist.
Repeat after me: “the official statistics about crime in London per capita are massively under reporting what’s happening in reality”
It’s a proper mess.
Trump was right about Khan
we were told that reduction in stop and search would be fine and okay but kids no longer fear getting stopped so they carry more brazenly.
I witnessed a stabbing 2 weeks ago and came across the police cordoning off a road yesterday because someone had been stabbed in an entirely different part of london.
It’s insanely bad.
You can’t police your way out of it but it is one of the tools you need to be allowed to use sufficiently. Be harsh on the kids in the streets and try and get in touch with them in the schools etc.
Parents also need to do far more to reign their kids in.
Didn’t we sack loads of police because the banks needed money? Isn’t this exactly the outcome that anyone could predict?
London’s police stations cut from 160 to 36, leading to hugely increased response time.
This was Mr Johnson’s idea… cut running costs, sell off some valuable real estate and save money. According to a report by the Institute of Fiscal Studies, each pound saved by the closures resulted in a ln increased cost to society of three times that.
It’s rather like the thinking around selling off the water industry, or our electricity infrastructure. Short-termism, opportunism, quick cash.
Remember: when the right tells you the NHS is broken…. yup. They broke it so they could sell it.
more distraction tactics, whatever.
There’s *so much* less for kids to get involved with now than when I was growing up. No free third spaces, no after school clubs, no community funded skateparks, no affordable recreational activities – most housing green spaces won’t even let kids play because they’re ’too loud’. Paid activities are prohibitively expensive for many families.
Yea, under funding of policing is an issue but let’s face it once kids get to the point of needing to be interacted with by police, we have already failed them at hundreds of other points.
Hurt people hurt people.
Life is miserable for most the only outlet is violence.
Remarkable how people immediately talk about the police.. sure there were cuts.
But why is it not a problem with society?
Police = react.
Shit people = make choices
It was definitely getting visibly worse a year or so ago, not sure now but I saw a lot of knifes on show or put to use about 1.5 years ago, one was a bag snatcher that got pissed he lost his grip and tried to knife the guy out of frustration, others gang related
The “researchers” mentioned are Policy Exchange, essentially just a bunch of Tories who claim to be an evidence-driven think tank, so I’m not surprised at all that their recommendations boil down to typical Tory talking points.
We all knew it on the Street. But the Mayor will still not accept it.
Knife crime in the UK is a fucking media distraction tool.
Ever done any fucking research on actual rates of incidents up and down the country? It’s not as much as they make out.
But what we get the rich get away with… is a fucking joke.
UK disgusts and disappoints me more everyday.
Not enough police. Not enough experienced police. Even fewer experienced good police.
A loss of respect for the police – employing murderers and rapists hasn’t helped. Nor has prosecuting armed officers for murder when they were doing their job.
Politicians focussing on ever longer sentences when all the evidence suggests they don’t deter crime – the risk of being caught does.
Little to keep young people occupied. Few adult role models. Lack lustre job prospects. Over crowded accommodation.
Lots of reasons why some crime is on the up. Which is why there isn’t a magic solution to it.
Media rage bait like the linked piece tends not to say what crimes their statistics cover because they want you to assume every number represents a stabbing. However if the numbers are large, you can assume the offences are mostly or entirely possession. Why? Because there were [3,900 “hospital episodes” recorded in English hospitals in 2023/24](https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/statistical/hospital-admitted-patient-care-activity/2023-24) due to assault by a sharp object. That’s roughly *10 stabbings per day across the whole of England*. These numbers are so small that a rise of just 2 stabbings per day is a 20% increase in stabbing crime. This makes it hard to interpret causes. When stabbings get lumped in with possession, for which the statistic is more like 50,000 offences a year, it’s impossible to say anything at all about stabbing.
While possession is bad – after all it’s a crime – it doesn’t mean that everyone walking around London is liable to be stabbed at any moment. It’s also important to remember, as the article alludes to, that knife crime is highly concentrated around a few very small areas, because the majority is gang-related.
Khan out Now Khan out Now Khan out Now Khan out Now Khan out Now Khan out Now Khan out Now Khan out Now Khan out Now
Weirdly, because being in possession of a knife is considered knife crime (and makes up the vast majority of these scary statistics), a ‘zero tolerance’ approach would technically cause recorded knife crime to go up. And then we can get even more of these clickbait articles.
On the one hand you have people celebrating people like that copper Lorne Castle getting sacked for tackling a knife welding arse hole and on the other knife crime unshockingly rising.
But…. London is safe…. crime is down… 🤦♀️

Don’t start fights with people.
People keep saying its because of economic reasons – does that mean dubai only has rich people? I thought it was filled with underpaid workers. And Singapore as well then – everyone must be rich?
Its not economic reasons – its lack of deterrence which emboldens criminals. Put in strict punishment measures, and see crime fall through. You only need to punish like 10% of the criminals severely to set the examples for the rest.
“Shocking”
It’s gotten so bad. Last year someone was stabbed outside of my flat and killed I was having lunch at home and saw the body from my window police tape everywhere.
This happened twice.
Zero tolerance is the way to go, we also need a broken windows policy in place. People get away with the little things too often, which leads to the big things. For many people, petty crime and violence has become a normal part of day to day life. Sadly, that goes for both the victims and the perpetrators alike.
But I thought London was getting safer? That’s what this sub tells me every time.

It’s important to understand what is meant by ‘knife crime’. The vast majority of knife crime offences are dealt with under knife and offensive weapons legislation, and relate to possession, not use, of a knife. [Government statistics](https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/knife-and-offensive-weapon-sentencing-statistics-january-to-march-2024/knife-and-offensive-weapon-sentencing-statistics-january-to-march-2024) handle these separately from stabbings, which are dealt with under offences against the person legislation.
