  1. Well, obviously. After what transpired in the last few years, it would be idiotic for any nuke-program-capable country NOT to fancy nuclear armament.

  2. Just what we need, more dictators with nuclear bombs. Hurray.

  3. Well having nukes with Erdoğan means another headshot to democracy.

    Even after Erdoğan we should strengthen democracy and checks and balances before developing any nuke.

  4. Can’t blame any country for feeling the same given the current shitshow that is international order

  5. As all countries on this planet but a handful of Western ones that think they live in Disneyland

    « Humanitarian superpowers » just brings laughter.

  6. I feel like you gotta add the context that this is due to the rising tensions in israel and the fear it brings since in the same article it talks about how 72% of the 2000 people they surveyed thinks nato would leave turkey alone if the war spread to turkey

  7. It’s normal for citizens of any country to want their country have a military advantage over others for safety reasons.

    Also it’s normal to wish no country other than yours have them.

  8. Well… Look at what the region around them looks like. Constant tensions with Greece, Russia again showing imperialistic tendencies (Turkey is controlling important passage that if Russia wants to use can easily spark conflict with them) and NATO maybe doesnt exist in 20,30 years. Israel, which everyone doubts has nuclear weapons, is obviously a threat in their view. Islamists in Iraq, Syria, Kurds.. If you have a nuke its a lot better then if you dont.

  9. Can’t blame them. It seems nukes is literally the only deterrent to “preemptive” defensiv strikes from terrorists.

  10. I’m surprised Turkey hasn’t developed nuclear weapons already.

  11. They way Russia is acting, nuclear proliferation is inevitable. When you have a nuclear armed fascist state that constantly invaded it’s neighbours, and threats nuclear war every other week, it clear that nuclear weapons are the only guarantee of safety.

    We will se many nations get nuclear weapons in the coming years.

  12. 1) Turkey already has nuclear weapons from the US. While not fully in their control, they do have them on their territory.
    2) Turkey is part of nato and has protected Europe from mass migration for a long time.
    3) Turkey probably wants nuclear deterrent because of a nuclear neighbour that has nuclear weapons and is pretty hostile (Israel) considering Israel’s claim on parts of Turkey. Not to mention the funding of Kurdish terrorist groups.
    4) Turkey would not be able to use them offensively because it would result in mutual destruction. It would however prevent others from pursuing them with a major advantage.

    I’m not saying they should. But nukes are generally considered deterrence. They are not offensive weapons.

  13. This is bad in general, but I can’t really blame them, or any other country, for wanting nukes when it’s been proven to be the only viable deterrent to not being at the mercy of global superpowers

  14. Having the difficult neighbours Türkiye has, it is quite sensible to think about it. And I’m not talking about Greece.

  15. In a world where the US is purely transactional, everyone needs nukes.

    Canada, Poland, the Baltics, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan…

    I am sure the list goes on.

  16. Ucraine war showed true the old saying of the strong does what he wants and the weak suffers what he must, a nuclear country can do anything it wants without fearing armed opposition because they have nukes, so why shouldn’t every country just get nukes.
    *to add to this ucraine once had nukes but got rid of them for peace, i doubt it will ever happen again with another country.

  17. Anyone wondering why anyone would want nuclear weapons after seeing the attacks on Iran, well its precisely those attacks is why any country with a lick of sense would want nuclear weapons. It is the ultimate deterrent as North Korea has shown.

    Once you have nuclear weapons your almost untouchable as nobody wants to risk antagonising you enough to cause you to use them, just look at how slow and drawn out western support for Ukraine has been due to Russian threats of nuclear use, its only increased due to Russians not willing to back up the threats, but it still stalled the rollout

  18. Ukraine gave up their nuclear weapons in exchange for false promises that their borders would be respected. Now Russia seeks to wipe Ukraine off the map, because they know they are nuclear and Ukraine is not.

    How can I blame any country around the world for seeing the obvious? Nuclear weapons are necessary, to protect your sovereignty from your fellow nuclear states.

  19. And?
    My question is why we don’t have NOW a EU nuclear program for joint deterrence.

  20. Türkiye has 4 main reasons to build it’s own nuclear deterrence:

    Russia in the north;

    Israel in the south;

    Iran (building) in the east;

    Unreliable (to Türkiye) NATO.

    At this point it would be strategicly naive to NOT build it’s own nuclear weapons.

  21. Wow who would have thought that allowing nuclear country to just destroy the neighboring country with no real repercussions will persuade other countries to develop nukes?

    Thanks Angela, Olaf, Barack, Joe, marvelous job!

  22. Why would anyone trust the current “peacekeeper” countries when they are acting the most hypocrite they have ever been in last 50 years. Obviously anyone will want this

  23. Maybe fix your economy first, for the time being there’s little to invade Turkey over for there to be a need for nuclear deterrent.

  24. Non-proliferation thesis does not work anymore. The NPT was violated by a heavily nuclear-armed state to attack the atomic facilities of a non-nuclear-armed state, in direct violation of NPT, both the aggressor and the victim were the signatories of NPT. In the current configuration, you do not have credible deterrence if you do not posses nuclear deterrence.

  25. Not surprising, not one soul here believes US or Europe will actually defend us if push comes to shove. We need our own deterrent.

    I think everyone in this region should have them honestly. Greece, Sauds, Egypt etc. MAD shall save us all.

  26. With a neighbor like israel, who can blame them for wanting nukes?

  27. Russia: Hey Ukraine! Give us your nukes and we pinky promise we won’t invade you or anything.

    Also Russia: Hey Ukraine! You don’t have any nukes so we’ll just waltz in and take shit.

    Given the climate we are in, Turkey has the right idea (as stupid as it is).

  28. Nuclear powers in the region includes of Russia at North, able to drop nukes on will, Iran at East, capable and willing to produce nuclear weapons, and Israel at South, again, able to drop nukes if they wish. Worst of all, Russia and Israel clearly showed they’re both expansionist and aggressive as is, and Iran is a regional rival of Turkey that plays around with proxies at all times all over the Middle East. If NATO no longer gives enough value for nuclear defense, what else will Turkey will ever do anyway? You don’t just comfortably exist sandwiched between 3 nuclear powers. Of course people want their own safety.
