China calls for shared AI future, offering tech to developing countries • FRANCE 24 English

A four-wheelleed robotic dog that can climb up and down stairs, walk upright, and do back flips. This was just one of China’s many innovations on display at the World AI conference in Shanghai. Other robots served cans of soft drink and ice creams, danced with attendees, and looked strikingly real. But even as China showcased its tech prowess, it also claimed it was willing to share and called for more global cooperation and regulation when it comes to artificial intelligence. Currently, overall global AI governance is still fragmented, especially because countries have great differences, particularly in areas such as regulatory concepts and institutional rules. At the launch of the 3-day event with industry heavyweights, the country’s premier proposed establishing a World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization on behalf of the Chinese government. On the surface, it was an overt contrast to the US president’s strategy announced earlier in the week that would aggressively loosen domestic regulations. America is the country that started the AI race. And as president of the United States, I’m here today to declare that America is going to win it. We’re going to work hard. We’re going to win it. As the tech race heats up between the world’s two largest economies, and rapid AI advancements are being made, fears continue to mount over the technologies risks. Many worry how to curtail misinformation and its impact on employment and the environment if the industry goes unchecked. And for Washington, China is of great concern. The US continues to restrict exports of advanced technologies over fears they could enhance China’s military capabilities.

China is hosting the World AI conference in Shanghai this weekend, an annual event aimed at showcasing Beijing’s leadership in the evolution of technology. At the opening event Saturday, the country’s premier said China would be setting up a new organisation for cooperation on AI governance – again warning the risks of the technology must be considered as much as its benefits.
