Royal FrieslandCampina N.V. has announced an agreement to sell its Romanian operations to Hungarian agribusiness Bonafarm Group. The deal includes the Napolact brand and the company’s two production facilities located in Cluj-Napoca and Târgu Mureș.
The move follows a strategic review of FrieslandCampina’s presence in Romania and is aligned with the European Division’s goal of focusing on core markets and high value-added growth segments.
According to the official statement, although FrieslandCampina Romania holds a leading position in the local dairy market, the Romanian operations offered limited synergies with the company’s wider European portfolio and did not source milk from member farms of Royal FrieslandCampina.
“With Bonafarm Group as the new owner, the Romanian business has fresh opportunities for growth,” said Dustin Woodward, President of Royal FrieslandCampina Europe. He noted that Napolact is one of Romania’s most respected dairy brands and that the local team is experienced and well-established. “This decision was not taken lightly, but it allows us to better align our European portfolio with the group’s strategy of maximising the value of member-produced milk and focusing our resources more effectively,” he added.
The transaction covers FrieslandCampina’s full stake in the Romanian entity operating the Napolact brand, which employs approximately 400 people and runs two modern factories. The deal is subject to regulatory approvals, including from Romania’s Competition Council, and is expected to close by the end of December 2025.
Bonafarm sees the acquisition as a strategic step to expand its regional footprint in dairy processing. “We see great potential to grow the company and the Napolact brand further by building on local expertise, expanding production capacity and continuing collaboration with the existing team,” said Attila Csányi, CEO of Bonafarm Group. He added that the group plans to maintain strong relationships with commercial partners and suppliers and to contribute to the development of the Romanian dairy industry.
