Greece gets EU help to battle disastrous wildfires • FRANCE 24 English

Residents say this fire arrived within seconds. Fueled by soaring winds and a week-long heatwave, it traveled uphill and connected with another front. Suddenly, Cionary, the town northeast of Athens, was burning. Quickly, two houses caught fire, one on this side and one on that side. Fire was advancing from both directions, surrounding us. We hope the wind calms down. People’s property has been burned. Efforts of a lifetime. We are battling. But what can we do? Greek authorities say residents received three text messages telling them to evacuate to safe areas. But many chose to stay with makeshift means they joined more than 200 firefighters who were battling the flames on land and by air. Today we stayed because in seconds the fire was to our right, to our left, all around us. It surrounded us and we were shouting to put the fire out. Our house is burning. We would have been left without a home. Emergency services have also requested another six water bombing aircrafts from the EU’s civil protection mechanism as several fires burn across the country, including on two of its largest islands in the southwest. Greece and the wider Balkans have sweltered through a third summer heat wave this week with temperatures regularly topping 40°. Fires have also raged across Albania, Kosovo, and Bulgaria.

Greece battled wildfires that have ravaged homes and sparked evacuations for a second day on Sunday, with the help of Czech firefighters and Italian aircraft expected to arrive later. Story by Eliza Herbert.

  13. By the way, forests don't burn on their own. Often, they're deliberately set by immigrants venting their frustration, or by pyromaniacs from all nations. Rarely, they're caused by carelessness at work (which is the reason the media wants us to believe). Proof: 30-40 years ago, for example, Greece experienced extreme heatwaves, but hardly any forest fires, despite more forested areas. However, back then, there were also (almost) no immigrants.

  14. my aunt's house burned down in 1995 in Croatia due to a tv wire shortcut. They never recovered from it and lived in a camper van for decades.
