Trump warns Canada over plans to recognise Palestinian state

  1. Donald Trump has said it will be difficult to make a trade deal with Canada after the country’s Prime Minister said it would recognise a Palestinian state in September if certain conditions are met.

Mark Carney said the Palestinian Authority will need to commit to a major overhaul of its governance and hold a general elections in 2026, in which Hamas will play no part, for a Palestinian state to be recognised.

He said his goal was to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution but also “condemns the fact Israel has allowed a catastrophe to unfold in Gaza”.

Canada had long stated it would only recognise a Palestinian state at the conclusion of peace talks with Israel.

But Carney said the reality on the ground, including starvation of citizens in Gaza, meant “the prospect of a Palestinian state is literally receding before our eyes”.

Among the reasons, he said, were “the pervasive threat of Hamas terrorism to Israel,” accelerated settlement building across the West Bank and East Jerusalem and a vote by the Knesset calling for the annexation of the West Bank.

Malta has also announced it would recognise the state of Palestine.

Christopher Cutajar, the permanent secretary at Malta’s foreign ministry, told a UN General Assembly meeting that his country has long supported self-determination for the Palestinian people, and “as responsible actors, we have a duty to work to translate the concept of a two-state solution from theory into practice”.

The announcements come after [Sir Keir Starmer laid out plans on Tuesday to recognise a Palestinian state](https://inews.co.uk/opinion/starmer-is-finally-recognising-palestine-but-it-isnt-enough-3832345?srsltid=AfmBOorEHoyqoG9Kaj0pBYkKcSeoTrWIupFtJgHlLdE8ozpIBXH4kLvP&ico=in-line_link) in September unless Israel takes “substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire, and commits to a long-term sustainable peace”.

On Tuesday Donald Trump said he and Starmer had not discussed the move, and that recognising a Palestinian state would “reward Hamas”.

“You’re rewarding Hamas if you do that. I don’t think they should be rewarded,” he said.

On Wednesday, an influential group of peers warned Starmer’s pledge could breach international law as the territory may not meet the criteria for statehood under the Montevideo Convention, a treaty signed in 1933.

Some 38 members of the House of Lords, including some of the UK’s most eminent lawyers, have written to Attorney General Lord Hermer about the Prime Minister’s announcement.

  2. Trump needs to learn to keep his hands to himself.

He never learned to keep his hands out of anyone else’s pants.  He treats other nations like he treats women – something to be ordered, bought and sold.

    He’s not a sane person.

America just wants us to pretend he is.

    Again.

  3. Why would Canada reward by Hamas by doing this? Does Canada actually want Hamas to have a state? The liberal West is so stupid.

  4. I don’t quite understand the mention of the Montevideo Convention. That was an Americas thing. Is this just accepted as common international law? Because Events in my life time would seem to suggest otherwise. America signed it and spent most of this year trying to annex most of North America by economic force and threats. Not to mention all the meddling they’ve done in South America.

The only reason Palestine doesn’t meet the requirements of the convention is actions taken by Israel since it’s inception. Israel could be interpreted of going against the same convention, and around the circle we go. It’s seems to me that the UK’s interpretation is a catch-22 with no way in other than 3rd party recognition.

  5. Can Trump be productive in a positive manner…just for one day….please

  6. So the “small government” American party wants to be government of the world now? shocking.

  7. In what I’ve seen so far between the US and Canada’s relations. When being loud and annoying, Trump will just piss off Canadians and entrench their belief that we’re on the right side. We just stole an election from our Conservative Party because of how much we ALL hate this man.

Carney has been strong as a leader so far. And most Canadians support Palestinian recognition. There’s no better time than now. The west should recognize Palestine and leave the US and Israel (and whatever random islands that rely on US aid) alone in their votes.

  8. Honestly, all the countries recognizing Palestine are doing it the correct way: Hold elections, disarm Hamas and don’t let any of them participate. While the PA is definietly the lesser of two evils, its still not a great entity

  9. Uh oh, so now Canadian don’t like threats. LOL.

    > “We intend to do so because the Palestinian Authority has committed to lead much needed reform.”

    I don’t know Canada’s prime minister also part-times as a comedian.

  10. I’m curious how this all plays out. UK, France Italy, Canada, have all moved to state they will recognize a Palestinian state, with possibly Australia.

Three of these countries make up our five eyes alliance for global security, and our some of our strongest economic ties aswell.

  11. At what point do you just accept that America is just Israels muscle proxy for diplomacy / war / bailouts when they screw up or need money… like does the average American care this much about Israel? Do most Americans support Israel?

  12. What does recognizing Palestine have anything to do with trade? At this point Trump isn’t speaking for himself, he is just advocating for Israel. Where is his country’s self respect

  13. President Trump should respect the decisions of sovereign nations whatever they recognize a people statehood or whatever they dont, canada recognizing a Palestinan state with the preconditions haams has no part of it, and part of the two state solution doesnt hirt us foreign policy, newsflash the entire arab leauge recognizes Palestinan statehood, for some reason he not quick to slap sanctions or punish our gulf state allies, hmm maybe because this is just another excuse to beat up on what suppose to be our long time ally in the north called Canada.

Diasgree, with the two state solution or not, but it the right of sovereign nations to recognize both a independent and secure israel and a Palestinan state (granted Israel may need to control the borders, airspace and not allow a Palestinian army for security reasons)
