Türkiye
tourism

Türkiye has exceeded forecasts by generating over twenty-five billion dollars in tourism income during the first half of 2025, a performance that not only signals a robust post-pandemic recovery but also reinforces the nation’s standing as one of the world’s premier travel destinations. This remarkable achievement is driven by soaring international arrivals, strategic tourism investments, and expanded offerings that continue to attract travelers from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

During the first six months of 2025, Türkiye’s tourism industry surged ahead, generating an unprecedented twenty-five point eight billion dollars in revenue—marking a 7.6 percent increase from the previous year and underscoring the sector’s ongoing momentum and resilience.

Between January and June 2025, around 26.39 million international travelers visited Türkiye, reflecting a modest 1% increase over the same timeframe in 2024. This consistent upward trend supports the nation’s broader objective of welcoming 65 million visitors and generating a total of 64 billion dollars in tourism revenue by year’s end.

From April through June alone, Türkiye’s tourism income reached \$16.28 billion—an 8.4% jump compared to the second quarter of 2024. This growth not only set a quarterly record but also reinforced the upward trend in visitor spending and economic contribution.

Spending Trends Reflect Strong Demand

Tourists spent generously during the second quarter, helping the country achieve unprecedented levels of revenue. Of the \$16.28 billion collected in Q2, \$16.1 billion came from direct visitor expenditures, while transfer passengers accounted for another \$189 million.

Travelers contributed significantly through both independent travel and organized packages. Personal expenditures stood at \$11.1 billion, while package tours added \$4.99 billion. The average per-person spending rose to \$981 in the second quarter, marking a 6.1% increase from the same period a year earlier.

Türkiye saw growth across all spending categories. Package tours generated 31% of overall tourism income, followed by food and beverage purchases at 19.4%, and international transportation at 12.8%. Compared to last year, international transport spending rose 13.8%, food and beverage by 13.7%, and tourism services by 12.5%.

Leisure Travel Leads Visitor Motives

Most foreign visitors arrived for leisure, cultural events, entertainment, or sporting activities, with 71.1% citing these as their primary reasons for travel. Another 16.8% visited friends or relatives, while 5.6% came for shopping purposes.

Among those contributing to the overall income, Turkish citizens living abroad made a notable impact. They accounted for 16.5% of total visitor revenue during the second quarter, with the majority traveling for family-related reasons—around 60.7% of their visits.

The combination of tourism infrastructure, attractive pricing, and diverse offerings allowed Türkiye to maintain a competitive edge, even amid geopolitical tensions in the broader region.

Strong Economic Contribution

Tourism continues to serve as a critical pillar in Türkiye’s overall economic strategy, with second-quarter gains driving total annual tourism revenue to an impressive sixty-two point nine billion dollars and pushing the yearly visitor count to 62.7 million.

These figures show that tourism is contributing significantly to Türkiye’s foreign currency inflows, job creation, and service exports. By drawing a steady flow of visitors, the country continues to reinforce its position as a top-tier global destination.

In addition to direct spending, tourism supports related industries such as transport, retail, food services, and hospitality. The high per capita spending levels reflect strong purchasing behavior, especially in urban centers and coastal resort areas.

Outbound Tourism Also Grows

While inbound tourism delivered record earnings, outbound travel by Turkish citizens also experienced substantial growth in spending. In the second quarter alone, Turkish residents traveling abroad spent \$2.76 billion—up 41.1% from the same period in 2024.

Of this total, \$1.85 billion came from personal expenses, and \$909 million was spent on package tours. Despite the increase in expenditure, the number of outbound travelers declined slightly by 0.5% to 2.95 million, suggesting that fewer travelers spent more per person. The average per-person spending rose to \$936.

During the first half of 2025, Turkish citizens significantly increased their spending on international travel, with outbound tourism expenditure rising by 39.4% to hit $5.2 billion. The number of travelers heading abroad also grew by 2.4%, reaching a total of 5.54 million people.

This trend signals an increase in disposable income and stronger demand for international experiences among Turkish residents. Rising air connectivity and visa-free agreements with multiple destinations may also be encouraging more outbound travel.

Tourism Outlook Remains Positive

As Türkiye enters the second half of 2025, its tourism outlook remains highly optimistic. Strong spending patterns, diversified visitor origins, and continued investments in tourism infrastructure place the country on a stable trajectory to meet its annual revenue and arrival targets.

Key markets such as Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom continue to drive growth, while expanding flight routes and promotional campaigns are expected to attract visitors from newer source markets.

Sustained visitor demand across both traditional resorts and emerging inland destinations suggests that Türkiye’s tourism offerings are resonating widely. As tourists continue to prioritize cultural experiences, natural landscapes, and coastal retreats, Türkiye stands to benefit from its unique combination of affordability, accessibility, and variety.

Türkiye has surpassed tourism income expectations by earning over twenty-five billion dollars in just six months, driven by record-breaking visitor numbers and strategic expansion of its global travel offerings. This strong performance cements its status as a top-tier international destination.

The country’s ability to sustain growth in the face of global challenges underscores the resilience and strategic value of its tourism sector. With both inbound and outbound segments expanding in terms of revenue and travel volumes, Türkiye’s tourism industry appears well-positioned for continued success throughout 2025 and beyond.
