  1. On March 29, 2023, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov visited Jerusalem. The Trump administration is engaged in serious discussions with Azerbaijan and some Central Asian countries about joining the Abraham Accords. Unlike the original signatories, these countries already have diplomatic relations with Israel, so any agreement would be largely symbolic, aimed at deepening cooperation in areas like trade and defense.

Trump’s team is pursuing this expansion while efforts to bring Saudi Arabia into the accords remain stalled due to the ongoing war in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there. Saudi Arabia continues to insist that progress on Palestinian statehood is a condition for recognizing Israel. Another obstacle is the unresolved conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia. According to sources, the Trump administration views a peace deal between the two as a necessary step before Azerbaijan can join the accords.

Despite these challenges, talks with Azerbaijan are described as well-structured and advanced. Trump’s peace envoy Steve Witkoff visited Baku in March, followed by Aryeh Lightstone in the spring, both meeting with President Ilham Aliyev. Azerbaijani officials have also reached out to Central Asian countries like Kazakhstan to explore regional interest in joining the accords. The exact list of countries involved remains unclear. The State Department confirmed that expanding the Abraham Accords remains a priority. The Azerbaijani government has not commented.

  2. They all recognize Israel, which I was shocked to learn but it was a nice surprise! Sure, yea, box in Iran even harder.
