Hamas negotiators demand Jerusalem be Palestinian state capital

1. Hamas says it will not disarm unless an independent Palestinian state is established with Jerusalem as its capital.

   The statement, which reasserts a long-held demand by the group, seemingly came in response to a declaration by the Arab League last week that called for Hamas to lay down its weapons and release all remaining hostages. On Tuesday, the 22 member nations called for Hamas to relinquish control of Gaza and hand it over to the Palestinian Authority, which rules the West Bank.

   After comments from Steve Witkoff, the US’s envoy to the Middle East, claiming that Hamas was willing to disarm, the militant group said: “Armed resistance … cannot be relinquished except through the full restoration of our national rights, foremost among them the establishment of an independent, fully sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital”

3. I always wondered if Jerusalem should have been set up like Vatican city. I suspect that even then everyone would still fight over it.

4. Seems like they want headlines not solutions as that’s not a demand, that’s a guarantee of no deal.

5. Hamas digging in might be bad for Gaza and Israel but it has made the Arab states look like the adults in the room, so at least someone is diplomatically benfitting.

8. Israel says yes: Hamas gets what they want

   Israel says no: people blame Israel for saying no. More European nations recognize Palestine as punishment. NYT, BBC, the Guardian all print front page news claiming Israel is starving Gaza. Another wave of mob violence against Jews in Greece or the US.

   They keep getting rewarded by the West by making more and more outlandish demands that keep the war going, so of course they’ll keep upping the demands. No matter what they do, Israel will be blamed.

   Next week they’ll demand full sovereignty over the moon and the headlines will read “Netanyahu refuses ceasefire deal”.

9. Better continue the genocide then! Why would anyone pretend than this didn’t cross the line from proactive self defense to whole sale slaughter a long time ago?

   The article says nothing about the provenance of the letter, either. Why does it say it was written by Hamas “negotiators?” That makes it sound like an official position; is anyone with that position still even alive?

   Edit – I see other sources, like the BBC, are also reporting on this. It remains true that this is an ongoing slaughter that history will condemn.

10. Hasn’t this long been the Palestinian negotiating point..ie a shared capital of Jerusalem?
