Religion in the UK

  1. Good. Religion is the cause of so much violence and hate in our modern world that we’re much better off as a nation and a species without it. I’m proud of Scotland for being a world leader in this regard.

  2. Walks on water

  3. The areas of west central Scotland in blue are the result of a combo of a lot of pensioners and a lot of people who culturally identify as Catholic or Protestant

  4. Don’t care what religion you are or whether or not you’re an atheist as long as you’re not an insufferable twat.

  5. Man there was a a whole paper in the impact of disestablishing the Kirk had on religiosity in Scotland.

Makes me wish I had done a history masters.

  6. It’s worth noting that this uses separate data sources for England&Wales and Scotland. Separate censuses, separate timings, separate questions. I think that’s pretty obviously affected the output here, and the House of Commons Library have mashed it all into one.

  7. Aye but… is that Catholic non-religious, or Protestant non-religious?

  8. Time for Scottish schools to stop forcing Christianity on students?

  9. I always love it when map makers do their best to make two different dark blues (or whatever) virtually indistinguishable.

  10. Reasonably sure Na h-Eileanan an Siar (Western Isles / Outer Hebrides…too many names) is the most religious dominant part of the UK. It is already well known that a lot of businesses close on a Sunday: shops, pubs, locking up swing parks et (id like to add that isn’t 100% accurate as the southern half that are Catholic dominant basically everything is open. You can go to church and rock up in the pug and get rat arsed if you wish.) I think it was in 2019 general election we where the last areas in Scotland (or the UK?) to declare their votes. It was because the counting crossed over from Say to Sun and you know…gotta go study the bible. Was an odd thing to explain to my mainland friends. Even odder when I explained the Catholics didnt give two fucks about the “Sabbath.”

Genuinely love this chain of islands. Amazing history, a weird arse mix of cultures (Picts, Gaels, Vikings into whatever we are now) but by fuck does it get frustrating at times. Although thankfully, despite us being possible the most small “c” conservative area within the UK we have refused to vote for right wing cunts for the last 70+ years (a mix of Lab/SNP). Obviously the weirdos like the Scottish Family Party do well here compared to the rest of Scotland its still a pitiful number of votes for an area they should on paper do well in.
