Kenya’s refugee camps suffer as US slashes aid • FRANCE 24 English

In northwest Kenya, these mobile food warehouses serve as a crucial lifeline for thousands of refugees. They’re now nearly empty. This week, the tents became the site of violent confrontations between security forces and hungry protesters with at least two reported killed by live bullets. These angels that have been working into education, healthcare, food distribution, including world food program, all of them now they’re really down. They actually frozen. If nobody’s coming to to to help all of us, we are going to be dying. Mounting hunger is driving increasing unrest in the Kakuma and Calabi refugee camps. The settlements currently host more than 300,000 refugees fleeing conflicts in South Sudan, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The food shortages are a result of the withdrawal of US humanitarian aid. One of Donald Trump’s first acts upon returning to the White House in January was to dismantle USAID, cutting off some $63 billion in international development aid and humanitarian assistance. 6 months later, the domino effects are becoming clear. The UN’s World Food Program previously relied on the US for 70% of the funding for its Kenya operations. This is a crisis is a slow starvation. And this is where the world really needs to look at this situation carefully and restate funding for the refugee operations in Kenya. WFP rations at Kakoma have now been cut to just onethird of the UN’s recommended daily caloric intake. Aid workers warned the camp risks an impending famine in the coming months.

A severe humanitarian crisis is unfolding in northwest Kenya, where refugee camps housing people fleeing conflicts in South Sudan and the DRC are nearing collapse. The crisis was triggered by a sudden halt in US funding, as the Trump administration slashes foreign aid. Protests have since erupted in and around the camps, with rising tensions leading to outbreaks of violence.

  4. Sorry, it wasnt my damn problem in the first place and my tax dollars shouldnt be getting shuffled off to another continent, much less another country.

  5. All these African countries have been moving towards China and Russia, so its only right they take over what the US has been doing for decades through USAID. But we all know China would rather entrap these countries through debt traps. Africa, goodluck with your new friends

  6. France, Germany, U.K., Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, etc. are welcome to pick up the slack. The United States of America is focusing on internal aid for a change.

  7. Africa is full of resources! More than any other Nation! The problem is their culture of fleeing and backstabbing each other! Time for them to stay,fight and fix their Nation. The responsibility ultimately lies with themselves

  23. 70%! Why is it everytime the US is helping give aid, it usually means, a vast majority – if not all the aid. I am all for helping but…Where is the rest of the world? Why are they not helping?! 😠
