Transatlantic air travel between Europe and Canada is set to hit record highs this month, with August 2025 projected to see the largest number of scheduled flights ever recorded between the two regions.
A total of 4,276 one-way flights are scheduled from Europe to Canada, offering more than 1.2 million seats – a 5% increase on August 2024 and a striking 14% rise compared to pre-pandemic levels in August 2019.
The number of services has surged by over 40% compared to August 2015, underscoring a decade-long growth trend.
The surge comes as Canada continues to rise in popularity among European travellers, with the country increasingly favoured for long-haul summer getaways. Conversely, a growing number of Canadians are heading to Europe, further fuelling demand in both directions.
Air Canada Leads the Expansion
Canada’s flag carrier, Air Canada, has been the driving force behind this growth, expanding its Europe–Canada network by 8% this August compared to last year. The airline has added 112 extra flights, equating to over 34,500 additional seats.
Air Canada now operates over one-third of all scheduled transatlantic flights between Europe and Canada, maintaining its position as the market leader.
The airline’s expanded summer schedule includes added frequencies to key European destinations such as Athens, Dublin, Madrid, Paris and Stockholm, as well as five brand-new routes:
Edinburgh to Montréal-Trudeau
London Heathrow to Ottawa
Naples to Montréal-Trudeau
Prague to Toronto Pearson
Porto to Montréal-Trudeau
European Hotspots Fueling Growth
Athens recorded the sharpest increase in flights to Canada, with a 63% rise compared to August 2024. Edinburgh saw a 45% jump, while Madrid flights were up by 35%, reflecting the growing appetite for travel between southern Europe and North America.
As the peak summer season continues, airlines are capitalising on robust demand, with European and Canadian airports reporting full flights and high load factors on transatlantic services. The data signals a strong recovery and continued expansion of long-haul air travel between the two regions.
