  1. It would have made India’s strongman leader look weak, but I’ve read opinions that pandering to Trump with some (underserved) credit for the India-Pakistan ceasefire and a Nobel Prize nomination would have been a small price to pay for avoiding his wrath.

That’s exactly what Pakistan did; it’s own leader is an actual dictator but he knew the limits of their strength and was pragmatic enough to set personal feelings regarding Trump aside to see if he could extract any benefits from America; the fact that India refused to do the same proved to be a windfall for Pakistan, because it now looks better in Trump’s eyes.

  2. Of course it is. It’s obvious how desperate he is to win that Nobel peace prize. So much so that he said it, has the press secretary say it.

The India Pakistan conflict has lasted longer many a president and will continue in the fugue as long as terrorism isn’t brought under control. In this case of the latest conflict, the DGMOs of the armies spoke on the phone and asked for a ceasefire.

Yes India wants to maintain a good relationship with the United States but it owes its 1.4 billion people more.

  3. It’s not just about being upset over ceasefire credit.

It has taken the US establishment decades (and 9/11) to realise that Pak was a sponsor of terrorism, act on it and also stop supporting unelected dictators in Pak. Trump undid years of work with his actions.

When Trump entertains the Pak army chief (and not the elected PM) AFTER the army chief appears at the funeral of killed terrorists and says `the terrorists are part of us’ with a vow to continue state support of terror groups against India, it is a slap in the face for India. There was not a word of condemnation by Trump, for the murder of tourists in India, by a Pak based terror group. The QUAD had to remove any reference to Pakistan from its declaration under US pressure.

Trump’s contention was that he forced India to a ceasefire, with a threat of not signing a trade deal if we didn’t. We don’t have a trade deal. In fact, we have higher tariff’s than our neighbours. Trump’s inappropriate statements also display an ignorance of the dispute and of India, which would be laughable for a head of state, if not for the fact that his actions can have dangerous consequences.
