Man dies in collision involving e-scooter in Dublin

  1. I really think there needs to be more enforcement here from the roads policing. I’m a cyclist in the Dublin 15 area, and the amount of illegal electric vehicles going around is crazy.

My bike is electric, and limited to the legal 25 kph, so it’s easy to see the illegal ones as they zoom away from you (which is the majority, as far as I can see).

    Typically you see with e-scooters:

    * Modded to go at illegal speeds (not limited to the legal 20 km/h)
    * Underage users (users are supposed to be 16+)
    * Frequently no lights, no helmet, dark clothes.

I’m just looking at them thinking ‘that’s a death-trap’, the users need to be protected from themselves as much as anything.

  2. Work in hospitals and have seen so many hospitalisations from scooter accidents – genuinely more than I’ve seen from car-on-car accidents. Be it falling off, hitting into something/someone, or being hit by a car. The injuries sustained are really, really awful. Worst I saw was a skull fracture requiring time in ICU and incredibly invasive surgery.

I genuinely think these scooters could be useful for town/city commuters, but our infrastructure is sadly not ready for them. They should be registered, have adequate regulations & policing to protect speed, and users should be more mindful of traffic rules and wear protective gear. I think if you’d seen some of the things I’d seen, you’d never go near them though.

  3. Nearly hit a Just Eat delivery guy on one of these last night. Came flying around the corner while I was crawling along a narrow road in the car. He just about swerved out of the way. No lights or high vis on him

  4. I just love the way the language used in articles like this are written.

The headline doesn’t even mention a car, and the article doesn’t mention a driver.

These autonomous cars really doing damage the while time by the way the media reports on incidents.

  5. Saw a very close call the other evening. Car had green here in Clonsilla, moved forward, two young fellas on scooters came flying through the red light nearly got it. No helmets, dark clothes, night time. There’ll be a lot more deaths. I’m also terrified of them ploughing into my kids on footpaths.

  6. I think what makes it even worse is the young kids on escooters haven’t even had the experience of riding normal bikes around in traffic to give them any situational awareness.

They ride around like maniacs because they dont know any better. Parents giving these kids scooters also haven’t a clue what they are giving them or how fast they can go.

Guards can only do so much, but as that report last week shows, traffic guards in Ireland dont care.

The whole situation is a mess.

  7. Sure how many people die on bikes and cars in a weekend. A nothing article to get people hating on net zero transportation

  8. There was a guy going around our town awhile back just looking for trouble on his. It’s almost like he wanted to be hit. Several people complained about him and we actually seen him in action one day. I would advise every driver to invest in a dash cam.

  9. Coming home from work on Friday down through Cherry Orchard. Two kids on a scooter absolutely booting along and decided to swerve out in front on my colleagues car for no reason.
She had to jam on. She was lucky she missed them and they just laughed at her.

The handle bars where to high for the one driving.

My kids have had near misses with them booting around the place while we are walking to sports and get roared at the scooters.

Up along Station road/Cloverhill Road in Clondalkin the path is so narrow. I’ve had dickheads scream at me to move off the path. Again booting along but I’ve been screamed at to walk on a very dangerous road which is all bend.

  10. Every electric bike and escooter in Ireland should be registered and given a numberplate, the owner should have a licence, and they should be made to pay the same motor tax as an electric car.

Its the same shit again. Scrotes are just left off to do whatever they want.

  11. Headline makes it sound like an escooter killed someone.

No, a car hit someone on an escooter and the man on the scooter died.

  12. Same craic here in Galway, lads on their phones while operating a motorised bicycles going too fast and the wrong way up one way systems, and all through the pedestrianised areas. They don’t care about the rules.

  13. I find it absurd that these are allowed to be used without some form of a licence.

It doesn’t have to be some big thing like a driving test, but if you are going to be using the roads you should have to prove you have an understanding of the rules of the road.

You cant drive a car or motorbike on the roads without passing a theory test. Why is it different here

  14. Why doesn’t the title mention that there was a CAR also involved in the collision?

  15. A lot of those driving them, seem to have no idea about road safety at even the most basic level. Twice recently, one time as I was driving, I saw two young guys take off from the side of the road without once looking around first, to see if there was any traffic approaching. And just last week, I saw a guy turn around and go back to retrieve his cap which had fallen on the road. Again, he never took cognisance of where he was, was there any traffic around, or anything as basic as just cop on re his surroundings. They were all lucky but one day that luck could run out. It’s crazy.

  16. A lot of the e scooters in our area are delivering drugs , not people I feel sorry for

  17. I was pulling out of a Tesco car park one day and saw a guy on an e-scooter on the footpath look at me and intentionally speed up to cut across me with no regard for his own safety. No helmet or nothing on him for protection either.

Luckily for him I was coming to a stop anyways, but had that been someone who was taking off to take a turn he would’ve been on the bonnet before he knew it.

Look I’m not anti e-scooter, they’re fine when used correctly, but there is a very obvious disregard by users for the danger they put themselves in.

And I’m sick of drivers in cars constantly being told it’s their duty to ensure others safety. I’m not a road demon, but I’m also pretty sure it’s not my job to protect people from their own stupidity and sense of entitlement when they blatantly disregard proper road usage. I can only follow the rules of the road I can’t predict when someone else is going to throw caution to the wind.

  18. I use an escooter regularly. I really wish many others who do would:

    A) be  careful about downhill speed. There are delimiters but downhill they often mean nothing. Scooters going downhill fast (particularly in the rain) are not going to brake suddenly without serious potential for the person on it going flying, and the scooter itself potentially flying into traffic or St pedestrians.

    B) stay off the fucking foothpath. Scooters can weigh a serious amount (anyone under the impression they’re a similar weight to a bicycle – they are *far* heavier) and the weight is all centered in the part you stand on. If you hit someone at even 15kmph i reckon you’re looking less at standard broken ankles or legs, and much more at reconstructive type surgeries.

    C) wear a fucking helmet! A slow, clumsy fall forwards is much easier to handle o na scooter than a bike since you can just hop off. I think this leads to a false sense of se purity be cause with how they are built and the way people stand in scooters, if something clips you from behind you are liable to ragdoll off the thing with no control over how you land (while on a bike the core of it between your legs can at least help centre/secure you *somewhat)*.

Scooters are absolutely incredible things and I would love to see them embraced for use by all ages and to help people with mobility issues also. But fuck me, some of the users of them really really seem intent on doing all they can to make sure that never happens.

All that said, no idea what happened here. And chalk the article up to yet another example of where bikes and scooters get the headline mention, as if cars and motorists are not also involved.

  19. Very sad to hear, unfortunately I’m not surprised. Can’t believe they there not more of these deaths due to these e-scooters on Irish roads. Saw one outside Limerick the other night, teenager, no lights, no visi vest no means of identifying and literally asking for it

  20. The amount of idiots who get access to our roads through bikes and escooters is crazy.

I thought there was a minimum level of common sense but that all changed when a housemate of mine decided she was going to cycle to work instead of getting the bus.

Comes back one evening with scrapes over her leg saying she fell off the bike. Work friend was with her and said she didn’t slow down turning into the estate down a hill on an icy evening.

Got the nitelink one night after a night out with the housemates and was walking back to the house on an icy night aswell. She took off walking like it was the middle of summer and the paths slippy as fuck.

You see people flying along on these things without a helmet or a care in the world. You can tell there’s no sensing for danger or awareness.

  21. That’s terrible news. There are going to be more and more people killed riding these electric scooters/bikes around the place.

And these vehicles are also going to seriously injure or kill people on footpaths, as I’ve seen people going around 30-40 km/h on footpaths, zooming past kids.

  22. Time to go nuclear and completely ban these infernal things and as correctly pointed out they have none of the health benefits of cycling

Unfortunately there will be more deaths and injuries as nothing will be done to enforce the rules of the road

  23. Guy doing 50 kmph on one of these scooters in Donaghmede yesterday. No protection. Wearing a T- shirt with his shopping on one arm knocking the balance off, wobbling like a fcking eejit. Thought he was going to go under my wheel at one stage.

Minimum requirement of helmet and knee pads needed …and yesterday!!

  24. I kinda feel going forward we are going to see the death of a scooter rider about every 4-6 weeks, maybe more frequently over time as they increase further in popularity.

I think scooters are great, theyre a fantastic way of getting around. What isnt great though is allowing thousands of people with no knowledge of the rules of the road out on to those very roads.
