South Korea removes anti-North Korean loudspeakers on border • FRANCE 24 English

These speakers used to blare world news and popular K-pop music across the border into North Korea. A provocative move by Soul to promote democracy and propaganda to its neighbor. Now the newly elected government is having them dismantled in attempt to restore trust between the two countries. Our military began removing loudspeakers towards North Korea starting today. It’s a practical measure to help ease tensions between the South and the North without affecting the military’s readiness posture. When he was elected, the left-leaning Democratic President Lee Jay Mang pledged to restore communications between Soul and Pyongyang. As an act of goodwill, he first had the speakers switched off in June, shortly after he took office. It marked a U-turn from his conservative predecessor, Yunokul, who had restarted the dormant speakers. a year earlier in retaliation to North Korea after it launched thousands of balloons filled with trash and manure to the south. Pyongyang views the speakers as an act of psychological warfare. But Soul’s recent overtures appear to have made little difference. If Soul expected that it could reverse all the results it had made with a few sentimental words, nothing is more serious miscalculation than it. Since the armistice of 1953, North Korea and South Korea have remained technically at war. In recent years, relations between the two countries have been increasingly strained. But instead of seeking reparations with Seoul, Pyongyang has cozied up to Russia, supplying troops and ammunition to its war in Ukraine.

South Korean authorities began removing on Monday (August 4) loudspeakers blaring anti-North Korea broadcasts along the country’s border, Seoul’s defence ministry said, as the new government of President Lee Jae Myung seeks to ease tensions with Pyongyang.

  1. We dont go with trump! It keeps under arms! War crimes! Since before first term on Korean Americans! Trump is a war criminal again. Busting second chance!

  2. When the noise stops, people assume it means peace. But sometimes silence just hides the tension better. Speakers or not, the real message is still in the air—just quieter now.

  3. freedom and democracy are part of regimes where mistakes/corruption/abuse can be corrected with time, while absolutist, communist, autocratic or theocratic regime never give up their oppressive power and the grip on their subjects.

  4. The problem with all dictators they only respect strength appeasement to them equals to weakness from Putin, trump to Kim . Kim will only be emboldened by this

  5. Imagine your neighbour blasting loud music every day for a full year..I can't stand it even for a minute….but North Korea had to endure this for a decade
