Was anyone surprised? The man’s “joked” about being a dictator for a while now.
While it’s true that the president has significantly reduced El Salvador’s homicide rate, stabilized the economy and brought a sense of public order, the recent move to enable indefinite rule operates on an entirely different plane. Altering constitutional limits, even after tangible successes, shifts governance away from democratic legitimacy toward personalist authority. The achievements become rhetorical tools rather than mandates, and the language used to justify the power extension leans on national progress to obscure the erosion of institutional checks.
In short, when leaders rewrite the rules mid-game it’s never really about the people.
Oh, I am shocked this would happened. Who couldve see it coming, except everyone.
Many brutal dictators start as populair leaders. Not that suprising sadly.
Not to defend Bukele, but with this I think it’s worth pointing out that Evo Morales did the same thing but there was barely any push back on it. And in fact, he used Intra-American Court of Human Rights to do it. Just something to consider overall.
Oh, you mean he broke his little promise not to do so? That is why you dont vote for wannabe dictators.
