The dollar index has reached a 1-week low, decreasing by 0.37%. This decline follows hawkish comments from ECB Governing Council member Holzmann, which boosted the EUR/USD to a 1-week high and impacted the dollar negatively. For more details, refer to the source.

Holzmann’s assertion that there is no need for further ECB interest rate cuts supported the euro’s rise. Meanwhile, the dollar is under additional pressure due to heightened expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut, following weaker-than-expected U.S. payroll and PMI reports. Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari’s comment that it may soon be appropriate to cut interest rates contributed to the dollar’s decline.

President Trump’s recent tariff announcements have further added to the economic tension. He indicated that tariffs on semiconductor and pharmaceutical imports would be announced soon, and he plans to significantly increase tariffs on U.S. imports from India due to India’s Russian oil purchases. Additionally, tariffs on some Canadian goods have been raised to 35%, with new global minimum tariffs also being introduced.

The euro’s gains are somewhat limited by concerns over the potential impact of Trump’s tariff policies on Eurozone economic growth. Despite the euro’s rise, German factory orders saw an unexpected decline of 1.0% in June, marking the largest drop in five months. Eurozone retail sales, however, rose by 0.3%, meeting expectations.

In Japan, the yen strengthened against the dollar due to an increase in nominal wages. However, the yen’s gains are capped by higher T-note yields and concerns about the Bank of Japan‘s QE program.

Precious metals have shown mixed results, with gold prices falling and silver rising. The dollar’s decline has supported precious metals, but hawkish comments from ECB’s Holzmann and higher T-note yields have limited gains. Geopolitical risks and President Trump’s tariff policies continue to provide safe-haven support for precious metals.
