Radio Liberty publishes a previously unseen video from surveillance cameras, which shows the shooting of 70-year-old Bucha resident Volodymyr Rubailo, committed by the Russian military on Yablunska Street on March 4, 2022.

The video shows that the Russian military wounded Volodymyr Rubailo with the first shot, and then, when the civilian could barely stand on his feet, they shot him in the head with a well-aimed shot.

Soon, next to the body of Volodymyr Rubailo, which had been lying on the ground all this time, the Russian military began to massively rob a grocery supermarket. They broke the glass and went inside. The loot was put in baskets and bags and loaded onto armored vehicles. To take more, some stuffed carts and rolled them down the street to the newly captured houses of Bucha residents.

As Radio Liberty previously reported, Russian paratroopers from the 234th Air Assault Regiment from Pskov, namely a group led by Sergeant Vladimir Borzunov, may be involved in the murder of Vladimir Rubailo. As Radio Liberty established, its branch itself was at the position from where, according to Ukrainian ballistics, a civilian from Bucha was shot.

In a telephone conversation with a Radio Liberty correspondent, Sergeant Borzunov confirmed that it was the Russian military that killed Rubailo, but denied his involvement and the involvement of his wards in the murder of a civilian from Bucha.

Volodymyr Rubailo was born in 1951 in Bucha. He graduated from school there. He served in the ranks of the Soviet army in a company of honor guards in one of the military units in East Germany. Together with his wife, he raised two daughters. Before retirement, he worked for a long time as a driver at a forest enterprise in Irpin. He was shot by the Russian military on Yablunska Street on March 4, 2022.

"Bucha. Yablunska" is the third part of Radio Liberty's investigation into the massacres in Bucha. The previous part of the film "Bucha. The Murder of the Self-Defense Man Pobihai" in May 2025 received the gold award of the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards in the nomination "Human Rights" in the United States. And the first part, about the murder of SBU Colonel Oleksiy Telizhenko, became the basis for the Ukrainian security agencies to declare suspicion of a Russian officer, who was one of the defendants in the investigation.

According to the Archival Department of the Bucha City Council, 554 civilians were killed in the Bucha community during the Russian occupation.

43 bodies remain unidentified, and 38 civilians from Bucha are considered missing. At least 33 men are still in captivity. One of the detained civilians died in Russian captivity.

Russia denies the involvement of its troops in the mass killings of civilians in Bucha, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that during the stay of Russian troops in this city, "not a single local resident suffered from any violent actions", and Russian President Putin called the mass shootings in Bucha "fake" and "provocation"."-Radio Svoboda RFE
