  1. So in 2021 there were at least ten *households* discovered be living on the property and he was recently found to be have been in the process of further subdividing it.

Yeah, that 33k really sends a message.

  2. Fined £33,000

    £5,000 for three separate offences
    Victim surcharge of £500
    Legal costs totalling £14,294.21

£33,000 ÷ 12 months ÷ 18 tenants = £152.78 per tenant over the year (this appears to have gone on longer than a year).

Each tenant is probably paying £300+ a month. Assuming that, it’s rental income of £64,800 pa

Either some details are missing or the landlord is still massively profiting from this despite the court order. Regardless, most of the costs are coming from legal fees. A £5,000 fine per offence is not enough.

Instead of a £500 victim surcharge, if they made the landlord refund all rent from the start of tenancy, it would change the stakes considerably.

  3. They should clearly fine him all the income, plus some multiple.

It’s profitable otherwise, if you factor in the income, the 33 grand, and the fact that you’re not likely to get busted.

  4. Seize the property that would send a message and raise funds to safe support affordable housing …

  5. Sounds like a great pick for the recently vacant ‘Homelessness minister’ position.

  6. Used to go into a load of places like this when I was working on the ambulances in East London. Grim as fuck.

Thankfully a load of councils are cracking down on it – sadly the sentencing is behind the times, so the fines are the ‘cost of doing business’, because it’s not outside the realms of possibility that this guy has a few other properties under other names.

Should be custodial in my opinion as a deterrent.

  7. I used to live in a 5 bedroom terrace house in North London with 12 other people. There was one guy paying £40 a week for the cupboard underneath the stairs. Great party house.

  8. Could probably be selected as a Labour MP with that record!
