Spotlight on humanitarian aid to eastern Mauritania: Sahel crises.
We would like to invite you to apply to participate in the European Union’s Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations media trip to eastern Mauritania, from 1 to 6 November 2025.
The Sahel region is currently experiencing deepening instability, with 28.7 million people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. This is driven by record levels of forced displacement, escalating conflict, food insecurity, and climate-related shocks such as droughts and floods.
In this context, the ongoing crisis in Mali continues to affect Mauritania’s Hodh Ech Chargui region, which now hosts over 120,000 Malian refugees in M’bera camp, along with an estimated 150,000 more across numerous informal sites. This cross-border emergency highlights the pressing need for sustained international support.
The European Union plays a critical role in providing humanitarian and developmental aid across the region, but emergency funding is generally in decline.
This media trip will offer a unique opportunity to visit key locations in Hodh Ech Chargui where the humanitarian response is most visible.
Journalists will gain direct insight into the challenges faced by communities – both refugees and host populations – and the EU-funded work being carried out by its long-time partners, the World Food Programme, the UN Refugee Agency, and Action Against Hunger.
Deadline for registration: 25 August 2025, 17:00 CET.
Please note that after expressing your interest, we will review your application. If you are accepted, our team will contact you with more information concerning the programme and logistical arrangements. In that case, please confirm your participation as soon as possible so that we can process any needed visas and media accreditation.
