It’s a verse from an old song, illustrated with items presumably washed up on the shores of the Thames.
The passage of time essentially.
The Thames has flowed through the ages bearing witness to the Roman conquest and withdrawal the rise of the Saxon kingdoms the Norman conquest etc and through all that time the Thames has been there with settlements on its shores, artifacts make their way into the river and can be found centuries later as illustrated by the objects used there to make this
Pieces of clay pipe collected from the Thames foreshore. The words are from the song Old Father Thames by Raymond Wallace and Betsy O’Hogan.
Looks about two foot square give or take a few inches
Mudlarking. That’s just inside a tunnel on the Southbank isn’t it?
If anyone is looking to try mudlarking, a tour with a guy called Steve the Mudlark God is pretty great.
Clay tobacco pipes were the disposable cigarettes of their day, you’d smoke until it broke and then throw it in the Thames.
I waited for years trying to yet a legal mudlarking licence (we really do love licences dont we). After literally two years wait I decided that fuck it, if i cant pick up bits of rubbish out of the mud without the PLA’s permission then I really have no freedom.
Oh weird! I spotted that in Southwark Cathedral the other day.
Did you see the display case with all
The mudlarking finds? Because it’s so close to the foreshore I guess they’ve made it part of the church’s decor.
An old song “Old Father Thames” to do with old animistic beliefs where the river was believed to have a sort of identity. Several versions on Spotify.
It’s the first ever menu from the original KFC back in 3000BC 🍗
The underscores make it look like a plug for the mudlarkers Instagram
I do believe it’s about the Thames
I have a creative mudlarking permit so if anyone wants some old pipe bits to make their own, I can sort you out 😎
Southbank?
Old father Thames is a mudlarker on Instagram, these are some of the things they’ve found.
Couldn’t help but read this in my head Mighty Boosh style lol
A poem about the Thames next to some washed-up pieces of clay pipe. Evidently, Londoners used to throw their broken clay pipes into the river, as it’s still full of them.
Seems to be based on this old song
>Ol’ man river, dat ol’ man river
He mus’ know sumpin’, but don’t say nuthin’
He jes’ keeps rollin’
He keeps on rollin’ along
