Several European governments — including the UK, France, Denmark, Greece, and Slovenia — have issued a joint statement sharply criticizing Israel’s decision to broaden its military operations in Gaza. The appeal comes just hours before a scheduled UN Security Council session on the matter.

“This plan risks violating international humanitarian law,” the statement declares.

It stresses that “The Security Council has consistently called for the unconditional and immediate release of the hostages.

“And we are clear that Hamas must disarm and play no future part in the governance of Gaza, where the Palestinian Authority must have a central role. But this decision by the Israeli Government will do nothing to secure the return of the hostages and risks further endangering their lives.”

The five nations also pressed Israel to ease the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Israeli officials, however, have insisted there are no restrictions on such deliveries.
