Many Israelis emigrate over Gaza, discontent with Netanyahu • FRANCE 24 English

Greece has become a refuge for many Israelis fleeing what they see as a polarized country. Like Cynthia Tager, the software engineer left Tel Aviv with her husband and child. In Athens, she already feels at home. Everything here appears right for her. The climate, the cost of living, and the lifestyle. The October 7th attacks and the subsequent war in Gaza pushed Cynthia and her family to leave Israel. The main part of the decision is to do it for my kids. My kids uh they deserve a childhood like any other kid in the world. Uh that they are not worried about wars and where is the security room and if there are going to be bombings tonight or sirens. Visas, work permits, and other formalities are facilitated by the Greek authorities to attract Israelis, 10,000 of whom now make the country their home. In Galilee and northern Israel, Isar Berry is also joining the exodus. The former journalist turned peace activist decries Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, which he accuses of destroying Israel’s democracy. I took part in all protest in the last three years, but it it doesn’t work. It doesn’t work to stop trends of fascism. What going on now? Though he still has his house here and friends and family, he’s spending less and less time in Israel. What happening to our society? What happened to the our hopes to solve some someday the the conflict to make a compro kind of compromise. Isar’s new home is on the Aian Sea. In 2024, more people left Israel than moved to the country with official figures showing 82,000 Israelis immigrated. And latest polls show that onethird of Israelis are now thinking of leaving the country for good.

Israel is grappling with a profound social crisis, increasingly reflected in a growing wave of emigration. This surge is primarily driven by escalating political and security tensions, as well as widespread discontent with Prime Minister Netanyahu’s stance on the conflict. Oliver Farry has this story.

  3. We have Israeli people in our building. Fantastic people. In contrast the Palestinians (particularly from Gaza with the typical faith) are often doing crimes in my country

  29. Sadly, the ones who should be the first to leave are the ones who stay. But as an American who hopes to someday be a Canadian, I understand wanting to abandon a sinking ship. To the Palestinian people, I can not express strongly enough how ashamed I am of how the country of my birth has been complicit in your suffering.

  31. As a Greek they are more than welcome, Greece was the real home of the Jews for more than 2.000 years, longer than even ancient Jewish kingdoms some of which were Greek anyway. Albanians and Germans are the 2 biggest minorities in Greece anyway. Also I don’t know why people badmouth these migrants in the comments, it is literally what they should want. These people are also victims of war, many are excellent educated people who just want a better life.

  34. Israelis can emigrate so easily because they often hold more than one citizenship, and most likely, they have an EU citizenship due to their ancestors, making it relatively easy to migrate to any European Union country.
    Palestinians, on the contrary, don't even have a passport. If they want to leave their country, they need to go through Israeli checks, and most of the time, Israel doesn't allow them to leave. And even if they were able to leave, where would they go? They don't have another nationality, so they can't migrate anywhere without going through long and expensive migration processes.
