Chad’s opposition leader sentenced to 20 years in prison for inciting violence • FRANCE 24 English

[Applause] Supporters of opposition leader Suk Mazra hold a rally. Activists with Mazra’s Transformers party protested his sentence and condemned the government. His attorney called the conviction baseless. As you’ve seen, we’re unfortunately witnessing the establishment of a practice that consists of manipulating the justice system to settle political scores. We cannot stress this enough and it is regrettable for our country. Mazra, a staunch critic of current leader Mahmad Idris Debi, was handed a 20-year prison sentence and ordered to pay a fine of 1 and a half million euros. The court found him guilty of disseminating hateful and xenophobic messages and complicity in murder. Mazra was accused of inciting the Mandawu massacre that killed 42 people in May. In making their decision, the court relied on an audio message from 2023 in which Mazra is heard asking for people to be taught to use firearms. The conviction is a setback for the politician. He was forced into exile three years ago after a bloody crackdown on his followers, only returning under an amnesty deal last year which saw him appointed prime minister. Mazrav faced off against Debbie in the presidential elections held in May 2024 and claimed victory despite winning only 18 and 12% of the vote.

Chad’s criminal court on Saturday sentenced Success Masra, the country’s former prime minister and opposition leader, to 20 years in prison after convictions on charges including incitement to hatred and revolt and complicity to murder. The charges stemmed from a deadly clash between herders and farmers in May. Story by Catherine Viette.
