A Texas resident who relocated his family to Russia earlier this year has reportedly been sent near the front line in the war against Ukraine, according to his wife in a now-deleted video posted on the family’s YouTube channel.

Derek Huffman, his wife DeAnna, and their three daughters moved from the United States to the town of Istra, about 40 kilometers from Moscow, under Russia’s “shared values” visa program, aimed at attracting foreigners who reject what Russian officials call “destructive neoliberal ideology.”

The family documented their move on a YouTube channel and appeared in Russian state-affiliated media, describing their relocation as a rejection of US cultural trends and an embrace of what they considered traditional values.

Huffman joined the Russian military, stating that his service was intended to expedite citizenship for his family and to “earn a place” in Russian society. He initially believed he would serve in a non-combat role, such as a welder or war correspondent.

However, in a now-deleted video posted by his wife, she claimed that he had been sent close to the front line despite earlier assurances to the contrary. She added that Huffman had received limited training in Russian, a language he does not speak fluently, and had yet to be paid.

Tim Kirby, a US-born blogger who founded the “American village” settlement in Istra where the family lives, told The Dallas Morning News and Snopes.com that Huffman was not involved in front line combat and was performing duties in line with his original agreement. Huffman himself has not confirmed his location or specific role, citing security concerns, but has stated he is “doing what [he] thinks is right.”

The family’s move followed their dissatisfaction with the US education system, particularly regarding discussions of LGBTQ+ topics in schools. Huffman told Russian media that he wanted to contribute to his new country in a way that would demonstrate commitment and integration.

The Huffmans have since appealed for a safer posting for Derek. A Telegram channel titled “Save that little girls” appeared online, calling on the US government to help the family, though it is unclear who created it.

The war in Ukraine has resulted in nearly one million Russian soldiers killed or injured since February 2022.

Earlier, the CIA confirmed the death of 21-year-old Michael Gloss, son of Deputy Director for Digital Innovation Juliane Gallina Gloss, who was reportedly serving with Russia’s 137th Ryazan Regiment in Ukraine. According to media reports, Gloss had expressed support for Russia and criticism of US policies before signing a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense.
