August the 12th, 2025 – Zagreb is launching its most extensive traffic signal modernisation project in the last 20 years, with smart traffic lights coming to the capital.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the City of Zagreb is set to launch its most extensive traffic signal modernisation project in the last two decades. According to the implemented and active public procurement processes, over the next few months, so-called smart traffic lights will be installed at a total of nineteen locations across the city, according to a report from Jutarnji list.

All of these projects lumped together are worth around 1.6 million euros excluding VAT. Most of these locations are included in the large tender called “The implementation of dynamic signalisation in the area of the City of Zagreb”, while smaller projects such as those being carried out Ozaljska, Ulica Republike Austrije, Karlovačka, Sv. Mateja and Vatikanska have already been contracted or implemented.

The “Implementation of dynamic signalisation” project exceeds previous individual interventions in terms of value, technical complexity and scope. It includes the installation of new equipment, upgrades and more.

There are more and more cars on the capital’s roads, and tourism is seeing increases on an annual basis. That has transformed Zagreb into a tourist centre in its own right, as opposed to the host of an airport for flights to the coast only. That makes this Zagreb traffic signal modernisation project even more necessary.

The City of Zagreb was visited by almost 152,000 tourists in July alone, representative of two percent more than in the same month last year. In addition, an eight percent increase was achieved with almost 282,000 overnight stays registered, according to the Zagreb Tourist Board. They also emphasised the fact that Zagreb has confirmed itself as the leading “city break” destination in Croatia. With such impressive results in July, Zagreb continued this year’s positive tourism trends. All of that means more vehicles on the city’s roads throughout the year.

Data from the Zagreb Tourist Board (TZGZ) shows that in the first seven months of the year, more than 767,000 tourists came to Zagreb, achieving around 1.5 million overnight stays. That is two and three percent more than in the same months last year.
