Mauritius ‘to receive £35bn’ for Chagos deal over 99 years. Conservative shadow foreign secretary Dame Priti Patel accused ministers of trying to “cover up” the cost of ceding the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, accusing them of using an “accountancy trick” to price the deal at £3.4 billion.

  1. That’s rich coming from the Right Honourable Member for Tel Aviv.

  2. What a joke , I would love a future government to just say the deal is over we are keeping whats rightfuly ours.

  3. As crap as the deal is, calling DCF modelling for a 100 year project an ‘accounting trick’ is such a joke

  4. So Ms Patel… I expect you were :open and honest’ about the true cost of the Rwanda deal then ? Hmmm glass houses etc.

  5. Can someone explain to me why we’re paying them, as well as giving back the Island? To me this is the equivalent of going to a car dealership and having them give me the car, plus a lump sum of cash.

  6. At this point it would be almost easier to go to war with Mauritius over this. They would capitulate almost immediately.

  7. They’ll froth over an island they never heard of until their mate Terry at the pub told them – right after he was banned from Facebook again for ‘telling the truth’ – but not multinationals running off with half the country and evading tax.
