India is turning to Nigeria, Africa’s top oil producer, for its crude supplies as US pressure forces it to scale back Russian imports. Between September and October 2025, over two million barrels of Nigerian oil are set to reach Indian shores, with the Indian Oil Corporation securing Nigerian Agbami crude and Bharat Petroleum making additional spot purchases. The country has also purchased one million barrels each of Angolan Girassol and US Mars, and three million barrels of Abu Dhabi Murban. This marks a stark reversal for India, which had relied heavily on discounted Russian oil since 2022. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s own Dangote Refinery—Africa’s largest—is increasingly buying US crude, underscoring the oil trade’s unpredictable dynamics.
