More people have died than those born so far this year, according to new figures published by the state residency and identity agency.

Just under 2,200 people were born in Malta in the first half of this year, with 2,221 individuals dying during the same period, according to Identitá.

The numbers suggest that while births in Malta are on course to match last year’s figures, the number of people dying is on the rise.

Official statistics show that 4,378 people were born in Malta in 2024, alongside 4,181 deaths.

Identitá said that Gozo’s natural population, or the difference between births and deaths, remained unchanged during the first half of 2025, with 183 births in the island matching the 183 people who died.

However, there were 24 more deaths than births in Malta during this period, with 2,014 births and 2,038 deaths.

Meanwhile, there were 1,063 marriages registered during this period, the vast majority (991) of which were in Malta.

Identitá also issued a record number of ID cards during the first half of the year, with 57,891 new ID cards issued. The agency attributed the record figure to an ongoing exercise to renew ID cards across the country.

Malta’s passport office issued more than 26,000 passports in the first six months of 2025, down from just under 30,000 the previous year.

The figures also delve into the work carried out by Identitá’s compliance unit.

The agency carried out 92 on-site inspections in the first half of the year in collaboration with the police and other agencies. Most of these inspections took place on construction sites, hotels and restaurants, the agency said.

It also carried out 299 investigations into potential identity-related irregularities, with half of the cases (147) eventually being referred to the police for further investigation or action.
