US astronaut Jim Lovell, commander of Apollo 13, dead at 97 • FRANCE 24 English

Three American astronauts. Command module pilot James Levelvel. Born on March 25, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio. Jim Levelvel worked as a Navy pilot before joining NASA. He was one of three astronauts who became the first people to orbit the moon during the Apollo 8 mission in 1968. You got a color film, Jim? But it was Apollo 13 that would define his legacy, cementing his place among the greats of the US space program after rescuing a mission teetering on the brink of disaster as the world watched from below. 13 not successful in its initial mission was very successful in binding back together the people of the United States and the world and the space program as to uh how people can take almost complete disaster and turn it into something that’s very successful. Apollo 13 was intended to be humanity’s third lunar landing. Then an oxygen tank exploded on the way there. The disaster prompted a fellow astronaut to deliver that historic line. The astronauts and ground crew scrambled to find a solution. The US feared it could lose its first astronauts in space. Standing on the steps. But with the composed leadership of Levelvel, the crew managed to get home safely. NASA honored the astronaut’s legacy, posting to social media that Love Levelvel’s life and work inspired millions of people with courage under pressure that forged a path to the moon. Levelville was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, but never returned to space. He has survived by his four children. You save.

US astronaut Jim Lovell, the commander of the Apollo 13 Moon mission which nearly ended in disaster in 1970 after a mid-flight explosion, has died at the age of 97, NASA announced on August 8.

  1. Prayers for a great man, an American, before America went bad, went wrong. A shame that there's no going back to those times for America, failed democracy, least free "free" country. I think Jim Lovell is in a better place now.

  2. Two years ago I sent him a letter requesting a signed picture of him in astronaut suit. So glad and honored that he did… RIP Sir.
