War in Ukraine: Trump flags ‘swapping of territories’ ahead of Alaska talks • FRANCE 24 English

Well, Donald Trump said he would meet with Russia’s Vladimir Putin next Friday in Alaska to try and secure a deal to end the war in Ukraine. Peace has been elusive and it’s virtually impossible for any deal to settle tensions on the ground. Still, the meeting suggests Trump is confident in his ability to persuade Putin. Though some Russian analysts say Putin sees direct talks as his best chance to achieve all of his geopolitical goals in Ukraine. Earlier, Trump also suggested a peace deal between the two countries could include some swapping of territories. Here’s a Guardian’s David Smith in Washington. Surprising remarks Donald Trump made uh during an event at the White House on Friday talking about the the swapping of territories that supposedly would be to to both sides uh benefit. Um he didn’t elaborate further. There have been media reports suggesting that uh you know Russia is targeting four territories in Ukraine and would be allowed to claim two of them and then uh the the the battle lines would be frozen in the other two uh territories. Um and of course Russia also intent on keeping Crimea as well. Um if if those reports are true and they they also come along with Donald Tusk the prime minister of Poland suggesting that some kind of freeze in this conflict might be in sight. Uh it really will um put the spotlight on Vladimir Zalinski of Ukraine. Um is he willing to accept those terms? Um will he say wait a minute what what concessions are are Russia making here? And indeed, critics of Trump say that still there’s been no demands for Russia to to budge an inch on on anything. Uh on Friday, the deadline passed for um for Russia to uh uh reach some kind of truce and uh or face sanctions. There’s also no sign of those sanctions uh happening. Um I think um there’s still a long way to go before uh Ukraine and uh its parliament and its people are willing to accept that. not to mention um its European partners. Um so you know we may get this uh discussion between Trump and and Putin but it uh there could still be a significant gap between that and uh European allies including Ukraine itself accepting them um on Saturday. Uh some of those parties will be holding discussions uh in Britain uh possibly to to you know get get a get ahead of whatever Donald Trump is thinking. and the Ukrainian president.

President Volodymyr Zelensky on August 9 warned that “decisions without Ukraine” would not bring peace and ruled out ceding territory to Russia. “Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier,” he said on social media, as US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin prepare to hold a summit next week. The Guardian’s Washington bureau chief David Smith tells us more.

  2. Any discussion without Zelensky is nothing more than BS. The meeting should be all 3. And put them in a locked room and not let them out until an agreement has been reached.

  11. Western intel, all the hyped weapons, and all the sanctions yield less desirable results and play a diminishing role against Russia. While in Palestine, they are playing a role against democracy and human rights. Soon, most Western media and big talk politicians will lose trust in the world will see them naked.

  12. If Russia with all of its vast land it already controls, wants Crimea and Donbass. Then it's only fair that Ukraine gets parts of Russia that it chooses. How about Moscow and St Petersburg. They would make a nice annex to Ukraine. And Kursk. How's Putin feel about that swap?

  18. Ukraine don't give their land to Russia it's not possible trump is scared with Putin so he wants also Ukraine give their land to Russia,but whatever happens Ukraine is not accept , trump is not world leader,he is a leader and European don't want it so war will not stop

  20. All Putin needs to say is: Russia will nominate Trump for the Nobel peace prize. War will be finish. Trump will send US troops to Russia to help them liberate Ukraine. 😂😂😂

    However that might not happen because Putin would like to nominate himself for the Nobel peace prize since he is such a peace loving person who wants to liberate Ukrainians from themselves.

  25. I will tell you a little secret:) At the meeting between Putin and Trump, the issues of saving the US economy and redistributing spheres of influence in the global economy will be resolved. In simple words: They will have you, gentlemen Europeans, without your consent:)

  27. Well if we can transfer land for other countries what’s that say for our own country if your thinking blue and red states Texas is on the chopping block. Next thing will hear Mexico reclaimed Texas for its 53 state and the drug cartel got off free. Canada wants THE Northern states expanding their territory to offset the tariffs implemented this year. We’ve got a whole new diplomatic core that nothings off the table. Mexico and Canada are responsible for our northern and southern borders no more building walls or detention centers.

This meeting is pointless without Zelenskyy – it should be Trilateral with All 3 presidents in the same room – putin has always been too cowardly to meet Zelenskyy face-to-face. *However – According to latest recent breaking news – Let's wait to see if Zelenskyy is invited to join them in the meeting this Friday (fingers crossed)🤞🏼
