Explosion kills several members of army in southern Lebanon • FRANCE 24 English

Turning elsewhere now, several members of the Lebanese army were killed in an explosion in the south of the country. That accident happening as Lebanese forces were emptying a Hezbollah military facility. Iran also earlier today confirmed that it opposes disarming the militant group, a plan that the Lebanese government and military have of course been discussing extensively over the past week. Earlier, we spoke to our correspondent in Beirut, Road Taha, for more. We know for a fact that the Lebanese army has been conducting raids on former Hezbollah sites mostly located in southern Lebanon very close to the border with Israel. Now the Lebanese army has been dismantling’s infrastructure south of the Lethania River a few kilometers away from the border with Israel since the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel in November of last year. Uh as far as we know that today the army was conducting one of those uh casual raids onto a Hezbollah facility that was not yet dismantled uh close to the city of uh of tier in southern Lebanon shortly after the entry into that location. At least uh six Lebanese armed forces uh soldiers have been killed in that blast which occurred before they started dismantling that uh location. Now we know for a fact that Hezbollah has booby trapped some of its sites uh before leaving those sites during the war with Israel. Now, as Hezbollah sources or people close to Hzbollah say that these sites were booby trapped in order for uh those explosions to occur to occur once Israeli forces enter those sites, we know at a time that uh in late of last year, Israeli soldiers uh were maneuvering in southern Lebanon trying to dismantle those sites uh themselves. So, this is what we have for now on this story.

The Lebanese army said on August 9 that several soldiers were killed and others wounded in an explosion while they were inspecting a weapons depot and dismantling its contents in the southern city of Tyre. Our correspondent in Beirut Rawad Taha tells us more.
